17 UCSD Swimmers Qualify for the NCAA Championships at Speedo Cup

LONG BEACH, Calif. - At the conclusion of the three day Speedo Cup, the UC San Diego women finished in second place, well ahead of Division I opponents USC, UC Irvine, San Jose State, Colorado State, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Cal State Northridge, New Mexico, Air Force and University of San Diego.  12 women qualified for the NCAA Championships at the meet:  Susan Bell, Emily Harlan, Andrea Lippin, Lauren O’Neill, Liz Whiteley, Heather Szmidt, Katie Baier, Kendall Bohn, Aubrey Panis, Shannon Simonds, Jennifer Sims and Karla Holman.  In the Men’s meet, thenTriton men finished in sixth place, just behind UC Irvine and USC, and ahead of UC Davis and Cal State Northridge.  Five men qualified for the NCAA Championships in March: Tim Fuller, Jesse Marin, Evan Hsiao, Devin Ancona and Steven Hardy.



1650 FREE  In the mile, SR Andrea Lippin started the last evening off with her A’ cut 17:27.43, splitting 10:31.02 at the 1,000, which is a B’ cut as well, and placing her 4th overall in the event.

200 BACKSTROKE  SR Susan Bell (2:05.39) and SO Aubrey Panis (2:05.89) placed 4th and 6th respectively, with both swimmer recording A’ times.  Bell’s time tied her lifetime best and 3rd all-time ranking swim from last year’s NCAA’s, while Panis’ swim vaults her into 4th all-time at UCSD.  FR Tori Edmiston also placed 14th in the event, finishing in 2:09.16.

100 FREESTYLE  In the 4 lap sprint event, SR Emily Harlan placed 3rd in an A’ cut 52.01, SO Shannon Simonds 10th (53.09), SO Katie Baier 13th (53.52) and SR Liz Whiteley 21st (54.01), all B’ cut times.  Panis, swimming in prelims, also recorded a B’ cut (53.18) in the event.

200 BREASTSTROKE  Alumnus Rosanna Delurgio placed 1st (2:17.12), SO Kendall Bohn (2:20.58) 9th, alumnus Sandra Lopez (2:23.64) 10th, SR Emily Starkie (2:28.43/2:28.11p) 24th, and FR Carianne Cunningham (2:29.11/2:28.45) 29th in the 8 length event.  Bohn’s time was an A’ cut, while Starkie and Cunningham both narrowly missed the B’ cut.  Also, swimming in prelims, Bell recorded a B’ cut 2:25.32.

200 BUTTERFLY In the championship heat of the event, SO Jennifer Sims recorded an A’ cut (2:07.40) in placing 6th.  FR Karla Holman also placed 15th in the event (2:08.34/2:08.97), and SR Lauren O’Neill 26th (2:11.71), a lifetime best for her.

400 FREE RELAY  The team of Bell (53.71), Panis (54.17), Simonds (52.71) and Harlan (51.54) placed 4th in an A’ cut 3:32.23.  Bell’s lead-off split was also a B’ cut for her.



1650 FREE  FR Greg Goodell, the lone Triton in the event, placed 15th in a season best 16:41.82, splitting a season best 9:54.91 at the 1,000.

200 BACKSTROKE  SO Steven Hardy placed 12th (1:51.90) in a lifetime best, ranking him 5th all-time in the event.  SO Devin Ancona also placed 16th in the event (1:56.77/1:54.81p).

100 FREESTYLE  SR Tim Fuller placed 7th in the event in an A’ cut 45.36, ranking him 4th all-time in the event.

200 BREASTSTROKE  JR Evan Hsiao placed 9th in the event in a B’ cut and lifetime best 2:06.57.  SO Dan Gluvers (2:10.42) also placed 18th, SR Jacob Dong (2:10.88) 19th, FR Andy Islip (2:12.40) 26th and JR Ryan Kloos 28th (2:15.74).

200 BUTTERFLY FR Kelvin Le placed 18th in a B’ cut 1:54.61, JR JP Oliver 20th in a B’ cut 1:55.22 and FR Behan Salamati (1:57.29/1:56.95p) 21st in the event.

400 FREE RELAY  In the last event of the night, the team of Dan Perdew, Todd Langland, Jesse Marin and Tim Fuller could not overcome a called false start on a relay exchange.  FR Dan Perdew’s lead-off split of 46.81 was good enough for a B’ cut.


The UCSD diving team is next in action on Dec. 1-2 for the Redlands Diving Invitational.  The next UCSD swimming meet is a women’s only event as the Tritons head to UCLA to face the Bruins in Los Angeles on Jan. 6.
