LA JOLLA, Calif. Day one of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational was cut short by rain on Friday afternoon. Both the open and invitational sections of women’s discus, along with most of the pole vault events were pushed back until Saturday morning while the women’s hammer throw was completed. Some of the women’s pole vault was completed, but had to be halted as the rain began to fall just after noon on the UCSD campus.

57 competitors were able to finish the women’s hammer throw on Friday with Jenny Dahlgren of Georgia winning the event with her toss of 230’9”. Loree Smith of NYAC finished second with a distance of 217’1”.

Melissa Karnaze and Erin Becker were the top two finishers for UCSD, coming in at 30th and 31st, respectively. Karnaze’s best toss went 147’10” while Becker posted a distance of 147’2”. Those two performances were the best two by a non-Division I athlete or someone competing unattached or for a track club.

Both the throwing and jumping events will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday while the running events will take place between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Triton Track & Field Stadium. For a complete list of Saturday’s schedule, please CLICK HERE.
