LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's track & field team had 12 of its student-athletes qualify for the 2007 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships that will be held in Charlotte, N.C., on May 24-26. Johnson C. Smith University will serve as the host for the event.
The number of qualifiers for the Tritons this season is the most of any year since the program moved to the D-II level prior to the 2000-01 season, matching last year's number on the women's side. UCSD had no qualifiers on the men's side as Daniel Anderson's provisional qualifying time in the 800 meters came up just short of making the national cut.
Head coach Tony Salerno will have competitors at the national meet in the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles, 3000 meters, 5000 meters, discus, javelin, triple jump, long jump, 4x100 meter relay and the 4x400 meter relay. Of the 12 student-athletes that qualified, for will take part in multiple events.
Laiah Blue will be the busiest UCSD student-athlete at the meet, competing in four different events. She enters the event with the second fastest time this year in the 100 hurdles and the fourth fastest time in the 400 hurdles. She will also take part in both relay events for the women.
Whitney Johnson holds the second best mark this season in the triple jump as well as the No. 4 mark this season in the long jump. Sprinter Amber Green will run in both relay events while Christine Merrill will run in both the 400 hurdles and the 4x100 relay event. Merrill will also be an alternate on the 4x400 squad.
Jillian Sola and Sarah Hendy will both participate in the discus while Torrey Trust will compete in the javelin while Diane Dunn will run in the 3000 meters and Emily McGregor will take on the 5000 meter race.
Rounding out the competitors are Katie Skorupa, Corey Sheredy and Anna Lee McGregor. Skorupa is scheduled to run in the 4x100 event while Sheredy and Anna Lee McGregor are slated to run the first two legs of the 4x400 event.
Last year, UCSD had an 18th place finish at the D-II National Championships that were held in Emporia, Kansas. Of the 12 Tritons to take part in this year's event, seven are making a return trip to the meet.
