Mission Statement

The mission of the UCSD sports medicine program is to provide the prevention, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. It is our goal to provide high quality health care in an educationally progressive atmosphere.

The UC San Diego Intercollegiate Athletic Training Department is comprised of three full-time ATCs, four graduate assistant ATCs and roughly 15 athletic training students (ATS). The ATS consist of students from San Diego State and UCSD. The UCSD Athletic Training Room is a clinical site for the San Diego State (SDSU) Accredited Athletic Training Education Program, as well as home to the UCSD athletic training internship program.

Athletic Trainers

Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS, CES
Head Athletic Trainer

Kevin Messey has been the Head Athletic Trainer at UC San Diego since 2006. Prior to that he was the assistant athletic trainer for four years at UCSD. Kevin earned his bachelor of science in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training at Southwest Missouri State University, then earned his master of science in Athletic Training at the Arizona School of Health Sciences. Kevin has diverse experience having worked at the high school, junior college and Division I levels, as well as spending time with the San Francicso 49ers and San Francisco Giants organizations and the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Kevin is an Approved Clinical Instructor for the Athletic Training Education Program at San Diego State University.

Tosh Tepraseuth MS, ATC, CES
Assistant Athletic Trainer

Tosh Tepraseuth is a certified Athletic Trainer who joined the UC San Diego Athletic family in 2007 after spending time at UC Riverside.  Tosh earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in sports science from the University of the Pacific in 2002. He served an internship with the San Francisco 49ers in the summer of 2002 before heading to Utah State University, where he served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer, earning his master’s of science degree in exercise science in 2004. Tosh is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, the California Athletic Trainers Association, and is an Approved Clinical Instructor for the SDSU Athletic Training Education Program. A native of Concord, CA, he roots for the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Athletics and Golden State Warriors.

Vanessa Yang MS, ATC, CES
Assistant Athletic Trainer

Vanessa Yang begins her fifth year as an Assistant Athletics Trainer at UCSD in 2011-12. Prior to appointment with UCSD Athletics, Yang had served the past two years as the head athletic trainer for the Club Sports program at UC San Diego. She was the go-to person for the 17 club sports teams on the La Jolla campus, utilizing the intercollegiate athletics training facility as her home base. Additionally she has spent time at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz., and at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Yang received her undergraduate degree from Penn State before working on her Athletic Training graduate degree at the Arizona School of Health Sciences. During her time with the United State Olympic Training Center, Yang spent time working with athletes in several sports, including wrestling, gymnastics, weightlifting and speed skating. Yang is also is an Approved Clinical Instructor for the SDSU Athletic Training Education Program.


Jasper Chang ATC
Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer

Jasper Chang joined the UCSD staff after receiving his B.S. in Movement and Sports Science with an emphasis in Athletic Training from University of La Verne in 2010. Chang worked with a variety of sports at La Verne, including their nationally recognized women’s volleyball team, as well as programs at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer. Post collegiately he worked with the national champion Claremont Men’s Rugby Club and the O.C. Flyers Professional Baseball Club in Fullerton, Calif. A native of Cerritos, Calif., Chang will be working with the UCSD cross country and men's volleyball teams.


Brian Carrillo ATC
Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer


Brian Carrillo joined the UC San Diego athletic training staff as a certified athletic trainer in the Spring of 2012 and is a graduate from San Diego State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training in May of 2011. During his years as an athletic training student and as a professional, he has had extensive experience with athletics at the different college levels, including working with San Diego Mesa JC football, women's volleyball and track & field programs, as well as the UCSD women's soccer and baseball teams. A native of Diamond Bar, Calif., Brian aspires to continue his education in hopes of becoming a physician's assistant specializing in orthopedics. He currently works with the women's crew, men's and women's swimming & diving and Softball teams at UCSD, while also serving as a preceptor for San Diego State University's Athletic Training Education Program.
Carolyn Dartt MEd, ATC
Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer

Carolyn Dartt joins the UCSD staff as a certified athletic trainer after earning her B.S. in Athletic Training from Ithaca College in 2010. She worked with a variety of sports at Ithaca College as well as at Cornell University. She then went on to earn a Master's degree in Kinesiology and Sports Medicine from the University of Virginia in 2011. While in Virginia, she served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Virginia Military Institute, working primarily with the women's soccer and men's lacrosse teams. After graduate school, Carolyn worked at Capital Region Orthopaedic Associates in upstate New York before coming to UCSD. A native of Niskayuna, NY, Carolyn will be working with the UCSD women's basketball and men's tennis teams.

 

Allison Pastor MS, ATC
Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer

Allison Pastor is a certified athletic trainer who received her B.S. in Exercise and Wellness from Arizona State University in 2010 and her M.S. in Athletic Training from The University of North Carolina- Greensboro in May of 2012. During her time in North Carolina, Pastor worked with a variety of sports including the Northern Guilford High School football state champions and the UNCG women's volleyball and baseball programs. Pastor also worked with the Winston-Salem Dash, the High-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, as part of the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainer's Society. Pastor will be working with the UCSD cross country and baseball teams, while also serving as a preceptor for the San Diego State Athletic Training Education Program.

Head west on Genesee Ave.
Turn left on Torrey Pines Rd.
Turn left at the next signal (Northpoint Drive - UCSD North Campus Entrance)
Continue through two stop signs, as the road curves right to the right it becomes Hopkins Drive
Park in Hopkins Parking Structure.
RIMAC is directly north of the structure and should be entered on the third floor.

Proceed to the first floor to find the Athletic Training Room.
