LA JOLLA, Calif. - Christian Bayne put away a game-high 28 points to lead the University of California San Diego men's basketball team to a 77-71 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) game of the season Thursday night at RIMAC Arena.
Winner of its last three games, UC San Diego improved to 4-3 overall. Cal State San Bernardino fell to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in the CCAA
Bayne, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, went 10-for-15 from the field with a pair of three-pointers and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. The guard scored 19 of his points in the second half. He also added three assists, three steals, two rebounds, and a block in 26 minutes of floor time.
Bayne's 28 points were the most by a Triton in a single game this season.
Forward Scott Everman finished with 11 points for UCSD, while forward Eric Patton had 10 and guard/forward Christian Oshita hauled in a team-best 10 rebounds. Guard Mikey Howell dished out four assists.
As a team, UC San Diego made 50 percent (27-54) of its shots on the night and netted 10 three-pointers. The Tritons turned the ball over just seven times and scored 21 points off of 14 Coyote turnovers.
UCSD led by as many as eight points in the first half, but found itself down, 39-38, at the intermission. An 11-point run by CSUSB in the second half propelled the Coyotes to a 10-point lead, 52-42, at the 13:51 mark. The Tritons responded by scoring the next seven points of the game to get back in it. With 3:53 left in the game and UC San Diego trailing by two points, 63-61, Everman drilled a trey to put the Tritons back in front and they stayed ahead until the final buzzer.
The lead changed hands 19 times in the game.
Cal State San Bernardino got 17 points from Dorian Butler and 12 apiece from T.A. Dixon and Blake McBride. McBride added five assists and Jacardo Hawkins had a game-high 13 rebounds
The Coyotes shot 45 percent (24-53) and hit 12 of their 21 three-pointers, 57 percent. They held a 37-25 advantage in rebounds, which included a 12-5 lead on the offensive glass.
UCSD travels to San Diego's North County to take on league opponent Cal State San Marcos (6-1, 1-0 CCAA) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Cougars handily won their first conference game Thursday, topping Cal State East Bay by a score of 93-78.
