BIG (WEST) NEWS FOR UC SAN DIEGO ATHLETICS
On Monday, Nov. 27, UC San Diego was officially invited to become a member of the NCAA Division I Big West Conference. The Tritons will begin a four-year reclassification period starting in the fall of 2020. They will play a full Big West schedule that season and will be eligible for NCAA Championships in men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo, and fencing. For the 2024-25 academic year, all sports will be eligible to compete in Big West and NCAA Division I championships. Read the full press release here.

UC San Diego enters the week on a nine-game winning streak dating back to Nov. 30 and are the only remaining undefeated team in CCAA play. The Tritons are currently receiving votes in the WBCA NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and are ranked 14th in the D2SIDA National Poll.

LAST TIME OUT
UC San Diego improved to 9-0 in the CCAA standings after earning victories against two of the top teams in the conference standings. The Tritons defeated previous second-place Humboldt State, 64-63, on two free throws by junior Kayla Sato with one second remaining. On Saturday, UC San Diego cruised to a win over previous fourth-place Chico State, 84-48, which was UC San Diego's largest margin of victory since defeating San Francisco State by 59 points on Jan. 7, 2016.

HOT SHOTS
UC San Diego junior guard Joleen Yang ranks ninth in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (49.3). Yang leads the Tritons in 3-pointers made this season (33) and leads the CCAA in 3-point field goals per game (2.5). As a team, UC San Diego is first in the CCAA and 48th in the country in 3-pointers made (110), despite not being in the top-50 in 3-pointers attempted. The Tritons are also 46th in the country and second in the CCAA in 3-point percentage (35.3). 

PRECISION PASSING
Senior guard Taylor Tanita is currently 8th in the nation in total assists (92), 10th in assists per game (6.1) and 43rd in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.04). As a team, UC San Diego is 19th in assists (258), 24th in assists per game (17.2) and 17th in the country in assist to turnover ratio (1.27).

OFF THE GLASS 
The Tritons are outrebounding opponents this season 656-511 (9.7 per game), which is the 12th largest margin in the nation. UC San Diego also ranks 8th nationally in defensive rebounds per contest (31 per game), and is 26th both in total rebounds (656) and total rebounds per game (43.7). Senior Dalayna Sampton ranks 21st in the country in total rebounds (154), 27th in rebounds per game (10.3) and 40th in defensive rebounds per game (7). In addition, sophomore forward Mikayla Williams has recorded seven double-doubles this season, which is tied for 20th in the nation.

UC San Diego is holding opponents to .349 percent shooting from the field, which ranks 24th nationally, and has held each of its last seven opponents under 40 percent shooting. Meanwhile, the Tritons are allowing just 58.8 point per game, which ranks second in the CCAA and 40th in the nation.

Senior forward Dalayna Sampton was named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week, for the second time this season on Dec. 19. She previously earned the honor on Nov. 28. On the season, the Vallejo native leads the team averaging 14.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.

2016-17 HIGHLIGHTS
UC San Diego highlighted its 2016-17 season by capturing a second successive CCAA regular-season crown. The Tritons finished runner-up in the CCAA Tournament after falling to Cal State East Bay, 62-53. UC San Diego earned a berth in the NCAA West Regional as the fourth seed, where it suffered a 69-65 loss to Simon Fraser in the quarterfinal. Head coach Heidi VanDerveer was named the CCAA Coach of the Year while junior transfer Dalayna Sampton earned CCAA Newcomer of the Year honors. The Tritons had three players named All-CCAA in Cassie MacLeod, Beth Mounier and Sampton. Joleen Yang earned honorable mention.

HEAD COACH HEIDI VANDERVEER
Heidi VanDerveer is in her sixth campaign as the head coach of the UC San Diego women's basketball team with a 116-46 overall record. VanDerveer was named 2016-17 CCAA Coach of the Year for the second-straight season, as she and her staff led the Tritons to a 23-7 overall record (17-3 CCAA) and a second-consecutive CCAA regular-season title. The Tritons qualified the NCAA Division II postseason for the 10th time since 2000-01, competing in the quarterfinals against Simon Fraser. Prior to coming to La Jolla, VanDerveer spent four seasons at Division III Occidental, where she compiled an impressive 83-26 record and led the Tigers to four straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) titles. VanDerveer has also spent time as the head coach at Eastern Washington and San Francisco after beginning her coaching career under Pat Summitt at Tennessee, and spent 12 years working in the WNBA.
