SAN RAMON, Calif. — University of California San Diego women’s basketball sophomore forward Mikayla Williams has been named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
It’s the first-career honor for Williams, who posted her ninth and 10th double-doubles of the season over the weekend to help the Tritons clinch their third-straight CCAA regular-season championship.
The sophomore forward recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds in a thrilling home victory over Cal Poly Pomona, 68-66, on Feb. 9, and followed it up with a 15-point, 12-rebound performance in a road win over Cal State San Bernardino, 60-51, on Feb. 10.
The Meath Park, SK, Canada native ranks seventh in CCAA play in points per game (14.9), seventh in rebounds per game (8.3) and third in field-goal percentage (.540), one spot ahead of senior teammate Dalayna Sampton (.522).
Overall this season, Williams is averaging 14.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in 12-consecutive games. She ranks 41st in the nation in field-goal percentage (.525) and 47th in total rebounds (222).
UC San Diego (21-3, 17-1 CCAA) hits the road this week for conference matchups at Chico State on Thursday, Feb. 15, and at Humboldt State on Saturday, Feb. 17.
