Tritons Drop Both Ends of Saturday Doubleheader

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 24th-ranked University of California San Diego softball team dropped a doubleheader to conference foe Stanislaus State on Saturday, resulting in a split of this weekend's four-game series.

The Tritons' records now stand at 27-14 overall and 20-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the Warriors are 26-18 overall and 17-13 in the league.

Prior to Saturday's first pitch, UC San Diego honored the academic and athletic achievements of its five seniors - Kendall Baker, Kelsi Maday, Rachel Phillips, Lauren Sanders, and Kendall Woken.

Game One: Warriors 3, Tritons 2

The Warriors took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Aliyah Garvin connected for an RBI double.

UCSD bounced back to tie the score after a groundout by Woken allowed Maday to cross the plate with smart baserunning.

Stanislaus State took the lead back in the fourth inning, tacking on two runs - one earned and one unearned.

Despite the Tritons loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh and cutting the lead to 3-2 with an RBI walk, the Warriors held on for the one-run win.

UC San Diego starter Robyn Wampler gave up five hits and struck out three while suffering the loss to fall to 18-7 on the year.

Game Two: Warriors 8, Tritons 0

Stanislaus State jumped out to a lead in the second inning, scoring seven runs on five hits. The Warriors added to their margin in the top of the sixth inning, pushing the lead to 8-0.

Leading the way for Stan State offensively in game two was Alanah Laupua-Vanisi, who collected three runs batted in.

Five different Tritons had one hit apiece. Baker and Maddy Lewis each stole a base. Starter Alanna Phillips (5-7) gave up three runs on two hits over 1.1 innings and took the loss.

UCSD left five runners on base in the game.

The Tritons defeated the Warriors by scores of 3-2 and 1-0 on Friday.

UC San Diego returns to action on Friday, April 20, with a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader at Cal State Monterey Bay.
