INDIANAPOLIS - The University of California San Diego men's and women's track and field teams will send six individuals to the NCAA Division II Championships on May 24-26 in Charlotte, N.C.
A total of six qualifiers is tied for the most UC San Diego has had in the last five years, as the Tritons also sent six to nationals in 2016.
Junior Matt Bowen (long jump and triple jump), senior Paul Doan (100 and 200 meters), senior Meghan Fletcher (400 hurdles), and juniors Tais Marinho-Gomez (triple jump), Arik Nesbit (triple jump) and Nicholas Rack (110 hurdles) will each compete for a national championship.
It will be the third NCAA Championship appearance for Bowen, who placed sixth in the triple jump as a true freshman in 2015 and took 10th in the long jump as a sophomore in 2016 before sitting out the 2017 season due to injury.
This season, Bowen won the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title in the long jump and triple jump, earning Field Athlete of the Meet honors in the process. Bowen's triple jump leap of 51-feet, 4.25-inches at the conference championships matched his personal best mark, which ranks No. 2 all-time at UC San Diego.
Meanwhile, Doan enters the national field for the first time in his four years after posting one of the best seasons for a sprinter in Triton history, setting new school records in both the 100 (10.39-seconds) and 200 meters (21.10). The senior from San Diego (St. Augustine HS) was named Track Athlete of the Meet at the CCAA Championships and also earned the High Point Award, after sweeping both events. Doan is UC San Diego's first men's sprinter to qualify for nationals in the Division II era (since 2001).
Rack is also the school record-holder in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.00, which was good enough for third place at the CCAA Championships. Nesbit finished second behind Bowen in the triple jump at the conference championships, and is No. 3 all-time (50') behind Bowen on the school's list.
In addition, Fletcher earned second place in the 400 hurdles at the conference championships as her best time of 1:00.59 ranks fourth all-time at UC San Diego. Marinho-Gomez stands second all-time in the triple jump at UC San Diego with a best leap of 40'1.5", which won her a first CCAA title.
