IRVINE, Calif. – The 10th-ranked UC San Diego women’s water polo team dropped a pair of decisions Sunday to finish eighth at the UCI Invitational. The Tritons fell to No. 7 Arizona State, 10-4, in game one before suffering a setback against No. 10 CSU Northridge, 9-7, in the finale.
UCSD falls to 10-6 overall on the season.
UCSD fell victim to a slow start in the opener as Arizona State earned a 10-4 win. The Tritons were held scoreless in the first half while ASU found the back of the cage five times to hold a 5-0 advantage at the intermission.
The Tritons jumped on the scoreboard with a pair of scores in the third quarter, but ASU answered with two goals of their own to lead 7-2 as the final period approached.
ASU finished out the win by scoring three times compared to a pair of goals from the Tritons in the fourth.
In the final game of the Invitational, the Tritons experienced a lackluster third quarter in the loss to CSU Northridge, 9-7.
The Tritons opened the game strong with a trio of scores in the first period and added two in the second to lead 5-4 at halftime.
The third quarter was the difference, as UCSD was shutout compared to the Matadors three goals to take control of the game. At the end of three periods, the score stood at 7-5 in favor of CSUN.
The Tritons attempt of a comeback was shut down by the Matadors as each team found the back of the net twice to make the final 9-7.
UCSD will play a two-game nonconference set next week against No. 12 Long Beach State and No. 5 UC Irvine. The Tritons will face LBSU in Long Beach on Friday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. before facing the Anteaters on Saturday, Mar. 1, in Irvine at 12 p.m.
