COLUMBUS, Ohio - UC San Diego's Travis Tibbitts opened competition Saturday at the NCAA Fencing Championships, hosted by The Ohio State University.
The sophomore sabreur recorded five victories over 15 bouts. Following three rounds of competition, Tibbitts is sitting in 20th place of 24 competitors heading into Sunday's action.
Tibbitts, a Santa Barbara native, posted wins over Yale's Hugh O'Cinneide, North Carolina's Sam Austin, Princeton's Philip Dershwitz, Ohio State's Rhys Douglas and Notre Dame's Kevin Hassett.
He scored 42 total touches and had 60 touches against for an indicator of -18.
Penn State's Kaito Streets leads the field after winning 14 of 15 bouts. Penn's Shaul Gordon is second with a 13-2 record and Ferenc Valkai of St. John's is in third at 12-3.
Rounds four and five get underway at 6 a.m. Pacific Sunday. Semifinal and final rounds are slated for a 10:45 a.m. start.
The 2014 NCAA Fencing Championships will be covered by live stats. In addition, ESPN3 will be broadcasting the semifinal and championship bouts live. An hour-long highlight show will air on ESPNU at 5 p.m. (PT) on April 1.
