LA JOLLA, Calif. – Third-ranked Stanford proved too much to handle Sunday as No. 13 UCSD fell to the Cardinal, 21-7, at Canyonview Aquatic Center. Stanford poured in five goals to open the match and never looked back to win its fifth straight game.

The Tritons fall to 17-10 overall following the loss, while the Cardinal improves to 14-1.

UCSD was led by a hat trick from Jolene Guiliana and two scores apiece from Sarah Lizotte and Julia Kirkland.

After the Cardinal opened the game with five straight scores, Guiliana found the back of the cage with :38 seconds remaining to make the score 5-1 at the end of one period.

Stanford followed with five more goals in the second quarter to lead 10-2 at the intermission. Kirkland scored for UCSD as the period began.

The Tritons scored five times in the second half, but Stanford couldn’t be stopped on the offensive end and tallied 11 goals to make the final 21-7. UCSD cut the Cardinal lead to 11-4 to begin the third period, but wouldn’t come any closer.

The Cardinal was led by Maggie Steffens’ four goals. The sophomore driver, who is a member of the U.S. National Team and led all players with 21 goals at the 2012 London Games, was a force at the two-meter line all day.

Stanford’s defense, which gives up 5.93 goals per contest, was led by a trio of goalkeepers in the cage as Gabby Stone, Emily Dorst and Julia Hermann made it tough on the Triton shooters.

Courtney Miller stopped three shots in the cage for UCSD.

The Tritons face Fresno Pacific next Friday, Mar. 28 at 6 p.m. at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
