Matt Macedo is in his second season as men's head coach of the UC San Diego swimming and diving program in 2012-13.

A former U.S. National Team member and 20-time All-American at Cal, Macedo was named the head coach of the Triton men on Aug. 25, 2011. He had been an assistant coach at UCSD for the previous three seasons since 2008.

Macedo has designed and implemented swimming, dry land and weight-training programs with an emphasis on the sprinters at UCSD. He was the primary coach of former Triton standout and current assistant Daniel Perdew, who won three NCAA titles under Macedo's watch and holds four school records.

Since Macedo's arrival, Tritons have won 12 national crowns, broken two NCAA Division II and 47 school records, produced 107 All-America performances and earned 77 conference titles.

In his collegiate head-coaching debut a year ago, Macedo guided the Tritons to a fourth consecutive Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference (PCSC) title and second straight national runner-up placement at the NCAA Division II Championships on the men's side. The UCSD women also took a fourth PCSC crown in as many seasons before turning in a third-place NCAA finish for the fourth year in succession and 10th time in 12 appearances at the Division II event.

The Tritons sent their largest contingent to the NCAA Division II Championships for the second year in a row, at 31 after qualifying 30 student-athletes in 2011. An all-time high of eight Triton swimmers then competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Neb., ahead of the 2012 London Games.

Macedo helped the Tritons put together one of their finest seasons in 2010-11. UCSD won its third consecutive PCSC title on both the men and women's sides and went on to post a tremendous showing at the NCAA Championships. The men were second, the team's highest finish to date at the Division II level, while the women took third.

The 2009-10 campaign also featured plenty of impressive performances. Perdew and Alex Henley were crowned as NCAA champions twice each, with the men's squad finishing seventh for the third year in a row and the women placing third. UCSD sent a total of 28 student-athletes, 14 men and 14 women, to the national meet.

Macedo was the head coach of Trinidad and Tobago's 2008 Olympic squad and led George Bovell III to an 11th-place finish in the 50 freestyle.

While an assistant with The Race Club in Florida, Macedo helped prepare 13 athletes for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. Nathan Adrian won gold in the 400 free relay, while Milorad Cavic took silver in the 100 butterfly.

From 2004-07, Macedo was the head age group coach at North Coast Aquatics in Carlsbad. He has also served as the head coach of the UCSD club program.

As a student-athlete at Cal, Macedo won back-to-back NCAA championships in the 400 free relay in 2001 and 2002. He was an Olympic Trials finalist in 2000, and competed in the 2001 World University Games. In 1999, he was ranked top-20 in the 50 free and top-50 in the 100 free worldwide.

Macedo graduated from Cal in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in American studies. He and his wife, Ashley, reside in La Jolla.
