PASADENA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Western Invitational, hosted by Caltech at Brown Gym, on Saturday.

The Triton men posted team victories over Air Force (15-12), Caltech (24-3) and Florida (22-5) and were defeated by Stanford (16-11). Squad highlights included epee defeating Stanford and foil taking down Air Force.

On the women's side, the Tritons picked up wins over Caltech (25-2) and Florida (22-5) while falling to Air Force (16-11), nationally-ranked Northwestern (18-9) and Stanford (18-9). The sabre team recorded a win over Air Force.

Junior Luc Ginestet was the standout for the UCSD men, finishing with a 10-2 record in the epee. He went udefeated against Stanford, Caltech and Florida. Sophomore Peter Meckling was 5-1 in sabre while senior Alex Lavin came away with a 6-2 mark in foil. Lavin collected an impressive upset victory over Stanford's Turner Caldwell, the runner-up at the 2012 NCAA Fencing Championships.

Freshman Alina Marshall posted nine wins in foil for the Triton women. Senior Alexandra Stanley had seven victories in sabre.

Up next, the Tritons will host the UCSD Duals on Saturday, Jan. 26 at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla. Also scheduled to compete are fellow Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California South Division members Arizona State, Caltech and UC Irvine.
