LA JOLLA, Calif. -
The UC San Diego fencing team returned to campus on Saturday, hosting a pair of Intercollegiate Fencing Conference rivas in UC Irvine and Arizona State at Main Gym.
After watching ASU take down UCI to start the day, the Tritons turned in a dominant performance of their own, defeating the Anteaters by a commanding 27-0 tally on the men's side and recording a 26-1 triumph in the women's bout. UCSD went on to record team victories over the Sun Devils as well, defeating ASU by a 18-9 count in the men's competition and 17-10 on the women's side.
The Triton men remain undefeated in conference action, while the women moved into a first place tie with Arizona State with their head-to-head victory over the Sun Devils. If the two teams remain tied at the end of the season, the tie will be broken based on victory margins against all conference opponents.
In squad matches, UCSD faced little resistance from UC Irvine, but did suffer narrow losses to Arizona State in men's epee (5-4) and women's foil (5-4). Women's sabre avenged an early season loss to ASU with a 5-4 victory in a strong showing.
Individually, Jonathan Ott and Nick Bartuzik posted the Tritons' best records of the day, as each went 6-0 in men's sabre. Alex Lavin, Brennan Louie and Nikolai Gutierrez achieved 5-1 records in men's foil, as did James Galamba in men's epee.
On the women's side Casey Gillcrist and Amy Bianchini went 3-0 in epee, while Lexy Stanley and Munira Gesner posted 5-1 records in women's sabre. Julia Wu also went 5-1, competing in women's foil.
The Tritons will return to action on Saturday, February 26 when they wrap up their conference schedule at UC Irvine, where they will take on UCLA, USC, UC Santa Barbara and Claremont.
