UCSD Fencers Compete in Northwestern Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill.- The UC San Diego fencing teams competed in the two-day Northwestern Invitational this weekend, facing top opponents from around the country. UCSD battled through 27 bout matches, with the men's side finishing the weekend an even 5-5, and the Triton women ending with a 4-9 result.

The Triton men triumphed over host Northwestern by a margin of 20-7. UCSD also earned wins against Wayne State, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, and Lawrence.

In men's epee competition, UCSD beat defending national champion Notre Dame, 6-3.

The men's five defeats came from the University of North Carolina, Princeton, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Duke; the latter four teams are currently ranked among the nation's top ten according to the CollegeFencing360.com Men's Coaches Poll.

On the women's side, UCSD beat Farleigh Dickinson, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, and Lawrence.

Senior Casey Gillcrist (epee) and sophomore Munira Gesner (sabre) were tabbed as top performers for the women Tritons, finishing 15-15, and 18-18, respectively.

The UCSD women's squad lost to Temple, Northwestern, Stevens, Wayne State, Princeton, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Duke, and UNC.

After the Individual Championships this weekend (time and location TBA), the Tritons will face UC Irvine at the UC Irvine Duals, Feb. 26 at 10 a.m.
