Release: Tuesday 03/20/2012

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego fencing team will send two swordsmen to vie for gold this weekend at the NCAA National Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Tritons Rose Forcier and Munira Gesner both placed second in their respective weapon categories at the NCAA West Regional to qualify for the national tournament's field of 144 participants.

Junior Rose Forcier, a San Diego native, will be one of 24 fencers competing in the women's foil category this weekend. Among her competitors will be the weapon's defending national champion, Harvard's Alexandra Kiefer. Forcier celebrated podium finishes in several competitions this season, most notably a second place win at the 16th Annual Bladerunner Tournament and a third place finish at the IFCSC Individual Championships.

Munira Gesner, a sophomore who hails from Sacramento, will join Forcier in Columbus to compete in women's sabre. Gesner will face 23 others in her quest for gold, including Duke University's Rebecca Ward, the defending national champion in sabre. Gesner had an outstanding 2011-12 season, finding the podium at a host of events, including placing first at the UC Irvine Collegiate Open and securing a third place finish at the NCAA West Invitational.

At last year's NCAA West Regional, both Forcier and Gesner captured third place finishes, narrowly failing to qualify for the 2011 national competition.

The 2012 NCAA National Championships will take place March 22-25 in Columbus, Ohio. View host Ohio State's tournament central page for more information about the competition's structure and bout times.
