UCSD Women Post Strong Results on Sunday at Newport Autumn Rowing Festival
Release: Sunday 11/04/2012
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Going out on the water early Sunday morning at Newport Aquatic Center, the UC San Diego women's crew team earned a slew of credible finishes during the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival.

"I thought we had an excellent performance today," said head coach Colin Truex. "The team just rowed hard, they rowed well, they improved on their times from last week as far as placing with other crews. They just did really well. I'm very happy with how they went and just carried themselves in the race for us and just really represented UCSD well."

The Triton women were represented by three teams in the Women's Open 8+ event. The UCSD "A" boat placed ninth out of 19 teams after crossing the finish line of the 4.5-km course in 16:23.

With a time of 17:08, the UCSD "B" boat placed 14th overall. Out of all "B" boats, UCSD's finished fourth behind UCLA (15:36, 4th), San Diego (16:06, 7th) and San Diego State (16:43, 12th).

Truex also cited seniors Alyssa Dixon-Word and Ashley Travaglione for their efforts in commanding their boats.

"Alyssa did an excellent job in the UCSD "A" boat and Ashley in the UCSD "B" boat," Truex said. "Those two did a great job leading their boats."

The "C" boat of UCSD finished just three seconds behind the "B" boat in 15th with a time of 17:11.

UCLA took three of the top four slots in the event, including first place, which the UCLA "A" boat claimed with a time of 14:51 to beat the Bruins' "C" boat by 17 seconds in second (15:08). UCSD's "C" boat was the second "C" boat to finish.

With two meets completed for the UCSD women this season, Truex is very upbeat about their future performances in the spring of 2013.

"We just have one more race left in the season and would like to continue to see improvement from the whole team," Truex said. "I'm very excited about the future and looking forward at getting back at it."

The women complete the fall section of their schedule on Sunday at the San Diego Fall Classic. The first race of the meet held at Mission Bay will begin at 6 a.m.
