No. 6 UCSD Advances Both Boats on Day One of 75th Dad Vail Regatta
Release: Friday 05/10/2013

PHILADELPHIA - Both UC San Diego women’s crews in action performed exceptionally well to begin the 75th Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta Friday morning on the Schuylkill River.

UCSD rowed to a first-place finish in the fourth and final heat of the DII/III Varsity 4+ competition out of Lane 4, timing 7:21.90 to narrowly edge Florida State (7:22.04) and become one of 12 crews to advance into the semifinal round.

“I am very pleased with the results from today,” remarked first-year Triton head coach Colin Truex. “The (V4) showed a lot of poise in winning their heat and set a good tone for the weekend. They posted the second-fastest overall time (behind Bowdoin’s 7:11.73 in Heat 3), but will really be in a dogfight to advance to the grand finals tomorrow. It should be fun to watch.”

A couple of hours later, the Tritons placed second (6:39.05) behind only top-ranked Nova Southeastern (6:33.30) in the second heat of the Division II Varsity 8+. UCSD is ranked sixth in the latest Division II national poll, released on May 8.

As such, Nova Southeastern grabbed the automatic entry through to the grand final, while UCSD will need a top-four repechage showing Saturday to gain a rematch with the Sharks.

“I would describe the V8 race as solid, but not spectacular,” added Truex. “We allowed Nova Southeastern to slip away early and weren’t able to pull back. We still posted a very respectable time and are looking to win the semifinal tomorrow and take on Nova again in the grand final.

“Overall, (it was) great racing on a perfect day for rowing.”

The Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta concludes on Saturday, May 11, with UCSD back on the water at 6:17 a.m. PT in the Varsity 4+ and 6:57 a.m. PT in the Varsity 8+, attempting to advance to finals with each boat. The rowing can be seen on beginning at 10 a.m. PT.
