The Tritons currently sit at 5-6 overall after going 1-3 in Berkeley at the NorCal Tournament. UCSD continued the season trend of spreading the wealth offensively as seven players now have scored 10 or more goals in 2013 and five players have dished out 10 or more assists. Tommy Friedrich powers the UCSD offense with 20 scores, while David Higginson facilitates the offense with a team-high 20 helpers.

Loyola Marymount was tabbed as the preseason favorite in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) after receiving three first-place votes, finishing ahead of previous WWPA champions Air Force (2012) and UCSD (2011) by two points.  Defending champion Air Force came in at tied for second alongside the Tritons. The Falcons received two first-place votes, while UCSD grabbed the final first-place vote. UC Davis was predicted to finish fourth, Santa Clara was voted fifth and newcomer Cal Baptist was picked sixth to round out the conference.

Cameron Ravanbach now sits at 362 career saves. The junior from La Jolla HS is nine saves away from entering the top 10 all-time career saves list, approaching assistant coach Glenn Busch’s (1997-00) mark of 371 … Head coach Denny Harper managed in his 1,000th career game last weekend and now sits at 1,002 career games … Bryan Lee recorded his first collegiate goal against UCSB Saturday … Two Tritons have amassed double-digits in goals, assists and steals in 2013. Jeffrey Jarvis has compiled 16 scores, dished out 12 helpers and recorded 11 steals, while Luca De Vivo has found the back of the cage 10 times, set-up a score 12 and grabbed a team-high 31 steals.

UCSD head coach Denny Harper is in his 34th season leading the Tritons. He has compiled a career record of 576-422-4, with a winning percentage of .575. Harper has led the Tritons to 15 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) titles and 11 appearances in the NCAA national championships. He has been named WWPA Coach of the Year 16 times and the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPA) Division II Coach of the Year five times. During the 2006 season, the Tritons set a program record in wins, completing a 26-6 season with their 14th WWPA title and a third-place finish at the NCAA National Championship tournament. Harper, a 1978 graduate of San Diego State University, began coaching at Rancho Alamitos High School, Indio High School and SDSU before coming to UCSD.

Loyola Marymount, ranked No. 8 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) poll, enters conference play at 5-4 overall. The Lions are winners of three straight and four of the last five, including victories over No. 20 Air Force, No. 16 Concordia and No. 7 UC Irvine. John Loughran’s (17th season) club is led by sophomore Milutin Mitrovic. The Serbia native was named the WWPA Newcomer of the Year in 2012 and is following suite with a strong start to his 2013 campaign. Mitrovic poured in 15 goals at the NorCal Tournament, leading LMU to a 3-1 record last weekend.

UCSD is 50-23 all-time against conference rival LMU. The two squads faced off four different times last season, splitting the season series 2-2. The Lions got the best of the Tritons at both the NorCal and SoCal Tournaments, while UCSD produced victories inside WWPA play. In front of a record crowd at Canyonview, the Tritons beat the Lions 10-8 in a battle before traveling to Los Angeles and escaping with a 7-4 win.

Navy enters on an eight-game road trip and is nearing the end of a stretch playing 16 of 18 games away from its home pool. The Midshipmen are scheduled to play Concordia in Irvine at 11 a.m. before traveling to San Diego for the 6 p.m. game at Canyonview. Overall, Navy is 8-9 on the year and is receiving votes in the CWPA poll. Head coach Mike Schofield’s (29th season) club is led by sophomore attacker Carl Dowzicky, who has totaled 31 goals in 2013.

UCSD is 13-8 all-time against Navy.  The two teams last played in 2011, which resulted in a 16-15 thrilling win for the Tritons. David Higginson tallied his first career goal with a minute left to propel UCSD to a comeback victory over the Midshipmen.

UC Santa Barbara, ranked No. 6 in the CWPA poll, enters with a 7-2 record. Senior captain Matt Gronow, who has totaled 22 goals in his 2013 campaign, leads UCSB. The Gauchos currently hold an 11-game winning streak in the series, dating back to 2008.
