LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 12th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team ended its regular season on a high note Saturday, defeating league opponent Cal State Dominguez Hills in four sets at RIMAC Arena. Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match were 25-20, 28-26, 19-25 and 25-16.
UCSD is now 25-5 overall and finished its CCAA campaign at 17-5, good for a third-place finish. Cal State San Bernardino (21-1) won the league title for the eighth straight year and Sonoma State (18-4) came in second. Both the Coyotes and Seawolves were winners Saturday night as well.
UC San Diego will now wait until Monday, Nov. 25, to learn its postseason plans. The field for the 2013 NCAA Division II Tournament, as well as the Regional sites, will be announced at 4:30 p.m. Pacific with a live selection show at NCAA.com. The Regionals run Dec. 5-8 while the Championship takes place Dec. 12-14 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Lizzy Andrews and Caitlin Brenton each totaled 15.0 points for the Tritons. Brenton finished with 12 kills, 11 digs, six block assists and three assists. Andrews had 10 kills, 10 digs, six blocks (four solos) and a pair of assists. Her block total was a new career-high and her 15.0 points matched a career-best.
UCSD setter Heidi Sierks also posted a double-double with 44 assists and 17 digs. Kameron Cooper hit .500 (8-1-14) with four block assists, while Sara McCutchan had eight kills and four block assists and Brittany Lombardi paced the team defensively with 21 digs.
The Toros got a match-high 15 kills out of Tarryn Luafalemana. Alijah Gunsaulus had 14 kills and 12 digs, Elizabeth Krieger had 10 kills and 13 digs and setter Dana Brown ended the night with 49 assists and 10 digs. Whitney Lee had seven blocks (two solos) and Korryne Kelley led all players with 24 digs.
For the match, UCSD hit .208 (54-22-154) and CSUDH swung at a lackluster .158 (56-30-165). The Tritons were solid on the attack in sets one (.410) and four (.351), but hit a combined .038 over sets two and three.
The Toros aced the Tritons five times, but made 11 errors from the service line.
CSUDH concluded its season with a 11-19 overall record and a 4-18 mark in CCAA play. The Toros tied for 11th place with Cal State Stanislaus.
It was the final career regular season match for seniors Andrews, Rachelle Kinney, Lombardi and McCutchan.
