Adamczyk, Calkins Named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Emily Adamczyk and Luke Calkins of the UC San Diego swimming and diving program have been named to 2012 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America At-Large teams for their strong performances in the classroom as well as the pool. The announcement was made Wednesday by CoSIDA. 

To be selected, a student-athlete must have a 3.30 GPA or higher, be at least a sophomore and possess legitimate athletic credentials. The men's at-large program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. The women's program includes bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.

Adamczyk, named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team, holds a 3.34 GPA as a biology major at UCSD's Muir College. The junior won a national title in the 200 breaststroke at the 2012 NCAA Championship in Texas, breaking the school record in the process. Adamczyk also placed third in the 100 breast in a personal-best time and was part of UCSD's 400 medley relay team that finished second. The Altadena native swam the second-fastest time in UCSD history in the 200 IM at NCAA's. At the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference (PCSC) Championship, Adamczyk won the 200 breaststroke and was second in the 100 breast and the 200 IM.

With a stellar 3.93 GPA as a mechanical engineering major at UCSD's Warren College, Calkins was selected to this year's third team. He helped lead the Tritons to a second-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championship, equaling the team's best-ever placing. Calkins took 11th in the 3-meter dive and 16th in the 1-meter dive at NCAA's, collecting seven total points for UCSD. The Overland Park, Kan., native finished second in the 3-meter dive and fourth in the 1-meter dive at the 2012 PCSC Championships.

Adamczyk and Calkins were named CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII in May.
