INDIANAPOLIS - A trio of UC San Diego men’s swimming affiliates wrapped up competition Friday morning at the 2013 USA Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships.

The five-day meet concludes on Saturday, June 29, at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).

Triton co-captain Nicholas Korth, who will be a senior in 2013-14, participated in all three distances of his specialty, the breaststroke. The meet, the sole qualifier for the 2013 FINA World Championships taking place later this summer in Barcelona, Spain, was held in long-course meters.

Korth first competed in the 200 breast on Wednesday, June 26, timing 2:17.67 for the 20th-best mark during morning prelims, a personal record by almost two and a half seconds over his seed time of 2:20.08 which ranked 40th out of 40 initial entrants. The Valencia native trailed Nicholas D’Innocenzo (2:19.16) by .07 seconds after 50 meters and actually fell further behind, by .53 seconds, at the halfway point, before staging a furious rally to touch the wall first by just under one and a half full seconds and win the first of five preliminary heats out of lane seven.

In the 50 breast on Thursday, Korth turned in the 18th-best prelim time of 29.07. Having snuck into the consolation B Final through a couple of scratched qualifiers, he went almost half a second faster, achieving another personal record in 28.59 to place third in the race and 11th overall in the event. Korth was seeded 21st.

Finally on Friday morning, Korth went 1:04.52 for a share of 29th in morning prelims of the 100.

Dane Stassi, the 2013 NCAA Division II national champion in the 200-yard butterfly and UCSD record-holder in both fly distances, won the bonus consolation (C Final) of the 200-meter fly on the meet’s first day on Tuesday. As the No. 21 seed (2:01.85) out of 25 swimmers entered, Stassi swam 2:01.39 in morning prelims, 17th-fastest and narrowly one spot shy of the B Final. He went 2:01.38 to hit the wall first ahead of his seven opponents later in the evening session.

Zachary Yong, who signed a National Letter-of-Intent to swim for UCSD beginning this fall, took up the lane right next to future teammate Korth during Wednesday’s prelims of the 200 breaststroke. The Irvine product out of University High School headed into the event seeded 38th (2:20.04), and turned in the 32nd-fastest prelim time of 2:22.32. Earning a spot in the bonus consolation (C Final) via age restriction, Yong made a huge two-plus-second improvement to 2:20.06 and touched sixth.
