National Swimmer of the Week Honors for UCSD Captains
Release: Tuesday 12/03/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego senior captains Anji Shakya and Nicholas Korth were each named in November by as a Counsilman Hunsaker Division II Swimmer of the Week.

Shakya was selected last Wednesday, Nov. 27, as UCSD’s top female swimmer at the annual Arena Invitational among an entirely-Division I field at East Los Angeles College, Nov. 21-23. The defending NCAA Division II 200 freestyle champion made it to championship finals in three events, placing sixth in the 500 free (4:56.46) and 200 back (2:02.83) and eighth in the 200 free (1:51.49). Her preliminary time of 4:50.30 in the 500 on the meet’s first day, the fastest of the morning and third-fastest overall, earned the Davis native automatic qualification into the 2014 NCAA Championships in Ohio. It is the best time in Division II by over five seconds so far this season.

Additionally, Shakya’s prelim swim in the 200 free (1:50.00) is the top time in Division II this year. She also posted the fifth-fastest time in Division II in the 100 back (57.38, prelims), 10th-fastest (tied) in the 100 free (51.88, prelims) and fourth-fastest in the 200 back.

Shakya anchored the fourth-place 200 free (1:33.72), fifth-place 400 free (3:25.58) and seventh-place 400 medley (3:51.38) and 800 free (7:34.98) relays. Every one of her swims over the three days was at least a B cut.

Korth was chosen on Nov. 15 after sweeping the breaststroke events in a dual loss at Division I rival UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Nov. 9. His winning times of 55.65 in the 100 and 2:00.47 in the 200 marked career bests in a dual meet for the two-time Triton captain out of Santa Clarita. Korth won the 100 by almost two full seconds and the 200 by over four seconds. He also swam the breast leg of the second-place 200 medley relay (then-season-best 1:34.20), as well as the leadoff leg of the third-place 200 free relay (1:25.12; 21.07 split).

The awards are the first two for UCSD for the current 2013-14 campaign. The Tritons had three national weekly honorees last season in Beth Dong (Jan. 8), Dane Stassi (Jan. 30) and Shakya (Feb. 19).

This is thus the second career Counsilman Hunsaker distinction for both Shakya and Korth, with the latter having earned the weekly award as a freshman on Feb. 23, 2011.

Korth himself had an incredible final Arena Invitational, with two individual wins and an automatic NCAA qualifier in the 200 breast, but West Chester University sophomore Victor Polyakov was given the honor on the basis of breaking the NCAA Division II record in the 500 free (4:20.26).
