RIVERSIDE, Calif. - In its final dual meet prior to the championship season, the No. 1 UC San Diego swimming and diving team earned a sweep over Cal Baptist Saturday at Lancer Aquatics Center.
Both Triton sides won big as the men defeated CBU 194.5 to 103.5 and the women topped the Lancers by a score of 190.0 to 110.0. UCSD swimmers and divers combined to win 21 of the 32 events, 11 of those coming from the women.
Three Triton women collected multiple wins in individual events. Emily Adamczyk won both breaststroke events, taking the 100 in 1:06.87 and the 200 in 2:23.26. She led a 1-2-3 finish for UCSD in the 200 as Eva Chen was second (2:28.17) and Casey Adams placed third (2:31.66).
Senior All-American Alex Henley was victorious in the 100 backstroke, topping the field with a time of 57.17. She also won the 500 freestyle by swimming a 5:00.61.
Anji Shakya won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.22 and also took the 200 backstroke in 2:08.44. In the 200 free, Shakya was joined on the podium by a pair of Triton teammates as Katherine Anderson was second (1:56.93) and Natasha Nguyen was third (1:58.24).
Other winners for the UCSD women included Jessica Norgaard in the 1000 freestyle (10:46.04), Jaclyn Amog in the 100 butterfly (57.53) and Chen, who won the 400 IM (4:36.96). The Tritons finished 1-2-3 in the 1000 free with Gabby Rossbach in second (10:46.52) and Megan Lee in third (10:47.11).
UCSD also won two relay events. Sandy Hon, Neda Nguyen, Amog and Sierra Robbins combined to take the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.62. Amog, Shakya, Norgaard and Natasha Nguyen teamed to win the 800 freestyle relay in 7:49.71.
The Lancer women picked up wins in the 50 free, the 100 free, the 200 fly and both diving events, the 1-meter and the three-meter.
"We didn't have our fastest meet today but our current phase of training has been draining," said UCSD co-head coach Corrie Falcon.
A trio of Triton men won two individual events each. Matt Herman had the best time in the 1000 freestyle with a 9:39.01 and also won the 500 free, finishing in 4:44.48.
Eric Owens dominated the backstroke events, winning the 100 in 51.52 and the 200 in 1:56.09. The Tritons went 1-2-3 in the 200 back with Paul Guzman in second (1:58.67) and Tyler Henry in third (2:00.83).
See Han Lee won both breaststrokes, posting a 58.74 in the 100 and a 2:06.69 in the 200.
Adam Rice won the 400 IM, swimming a 4:07.67.
Owens, Korth, Rice and Langland posted a time of 1:34.10 to win the 200 medley relay. In the 800 free relay, the team of Merrill, Lorch, Espiritu and Rice combined for a winning time of 7:03.34.
Cal Baptist was able to win both breaststroke events and both butterfly events as well as the 100 free and the 1-meter dive.
"Although we looked a bit tired in the water today, we had a great week of training and I was happy to send our seniors out with a win in their final dual," said UCSD co-head coach Matt Macedo. "I'm looking forward to defending our conference title in La Mirada in a couple of weeks."
The Pacific Collegiate Swim and Dive Conference Championships will be held Feb. 8-11 at the Splash La Mirada Region Aquatic Center in La Mirada, Calif. The Tritons will be looking for their fourth consecutive league titles before heading to the NCAA Championships.
