SAN DIEGO - The UC San Diego men's tennis team was tested during second day play of the 2012 SDSU Fall Invitational, where the Tritons continued to duel with Division I opponents.

"Overall, I'm pretty happy with the performances," said UCSD head coach Timmer Willing. "They battled back and went to a lot of three-set matches."

Camill Salomon prevailed in his must-win match during the "A" flight consolation round of 8, defeating Spencer Simon of San Diego State, 6-3, 6-1.

Tritons Horea Porutiu and Andrew Malozsak faced each other in "A" consolation play in a match to determine who would face Salomon. While Porutiu took the first set, 6-3, and Malozsak evened the match with his second-set 7-6 (7) win, Porutiu won the deciding third set with a 10-6 victory.

Guy Giubilato led initially in his match with Andrew Raphaelson of San Diego, winning 7-6 in the first set, but fell 6-2 and 6-1 in the second and third sets, respectively.

In the "B" flight consolation round of 8, Teddy Truong was defeated by USD's Jakob Karnopp in three sets, 6-3, 6-7 (8), 6-4.

The UCSD men's doubles team of Max Jiganti and Salomon beat the Aztec duo of Andranik Khachatryan and Juan Florez in the round of 8 by a score of 8-5. Advancing to the semifinals, Jiganti and Salomon took on Aliaksandr Malko and Marek Marksoo of Sacramento State but lost, 8-4.

UCSD entered the day with three teams in the doubles consolation bracket, including Ganesh Alagappan and Giubilato, who had a bye in the quarterfinals. Kona Luu and Porutiu had a close call with JP Boyd and Karnopp of USD, but ultimately prevailed, 6-3, 6-7 (8), 6-4. Despite losing to Tulsa's Matthew Kirby and USC's Corey Smith, Truong and Malozsak kept their match close and lost by an 8-5 score.

Luu and Porutiu proceeded to the doubles consolation semis and narrowly defeated teammates Alagappan and Giubilato, 8-6.

In addition, Luu played a match against unattached former Oregon player Parker Kelley. Despite an overwhelming 6-1 win in the second set to force a third, Kelley downed Luu, 6-2 and 6-3, in the first and last sets, respectively.

During the "A" Flight Consolation Backdraw match, Jiganti faced Marksoo again and led the Hornet early with a 6-3 win in the first set. However, Marksoo tied the match in the second set, 6-1, and followed that with a third-set winning score of 6-4 to secure the match.

UCSD is guaranteed a slot in the "A" consolation final and either Salomon or Porutiu will face the winner of the match between Raphaelson and Kieren Thompson of Arizona on Sunday at 8 a.m.

Luu and Porutiu play Raphaelson and Taylor at 9 a.m. on Sunday in the doubles consolation final. Raphaelson and Garrett Taylor reached the final by default due to an injury from the Kirby and Smith team.
