SAN DIEGO – The phrase “win or go home” was very applicable during the final day of the 2012 SDSU Fall Invitational on Sunday for three players of the UC San Diego men's tennis team, including Camill Salomon, who claimed the Tritons' lone individual title during the grueling tournament.

"The day went pretty well," said Tritons head coach Timmer Willing. "I'm pretty happy with the whole tournament and how everything went. It's just going to get better from here."

Salomon took on Kieren Thompson of Division-I Arizona in the "A" Flight Consolation bracket's championship match. Salomon won the first set of the final, 6-3, but lost the second one in close fashion, 7-5. The match proceeded to a thrilling, decisive third set in which Salomon defeated Thompson, 10-8, to claim the "A" Flight Consolation championship title.

"I was pretty happy with Camill, and the way he performed," Willing said. "Him and I just got to get on the same page on some things when I'm coaching, and we'll learn that as time goes on because he's open to listening. We need to make sure that we can get him in the best situation and improve his already very good game."

While Thompson reached the final upon defeating San Diego's Andrew Raphaelson, 6-3, 6-2, Salomon was slated to face teammate Horea Porutiu, who defaulted and allowed Salomon to advance to the final.

Porutiu and his doubles partner Kona Luu met their match in the doubles consolation final where they faced USD's Raphaelson and Garrett Taylor. Unfortunately, Luu and Porutiu fell to the Toreros, 8-4, to finish the day and the tournament as the runners-up of the doubles consolation bracket.

"They served a little better than us and returned a little better than us," Willing said. "I liked some of the things that we tried to do in the doubles. We just got to get better at it, and I think that's just going to take some time with practice."

The Tritons will only have five days to rest before they travel to their next competition, the UC Santa Barbara Classic, a three-day invitational which begins Friday and runs through Sunday.
