VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The UC San Diego men's and women's fencing squads continued their fall seasons at the North American Cup, held Nov. 9-12 in Virginia Beach. The Tritons went up against top level competitors in individual as well as team events over the four-day meet.
UCSD's best individual result on the men's side was posted by sophomore Jeffrey Chan, who placed 18th out of 161 competitors in Junior Foil.
In Junior Epee, freshman Eduard Zilinskiy was 36th of 177. Sophomore Peter Meckling placed 40th of 136 in Junior Saber and 61st of 148 as UCSD's top finisher in the Division I Saber classificiation. Sophomore Adam Campbell-Kruger took 80th in a large field of 264 in Division I Epee while junior Keric Moore placed 81st of 178 in Division I Foil.
In men's team events, UCSD was fifth of eight in Senior Foil (Chan, senior Alex Lavin, Moore, senior Joseph Schenkel), ninth of 12 squads in Senior Saber (junior Bryson Abilay, freshman Drew Dickinson, freshman Travis Tibbitts, Meckling) and 16th of 22 in Senior Epee (Campbell-Kruger, junior Luc Ginestet, Zilinskiy).
For the Triton women, freshman Megan Gesner had the best result of the trip, finishing 29th of 95 competitors in Junior Saber. Gesner was also UCSD's top placer in Division I Saber, taking 88th in a field of 110.
Nicole Chiang, also a freshman, led UCSD in a pair of events, placing 67th of 125 in Junior Foil and 72nd of 114 in Division I Foil. Chiang is off to a solid start in her first season with the Tritons as she took gold in foil at last week's Bladerunner in La Jolla.
In Division I Epee, junior Andrea Gory was 55th out of 137 entrants.
