LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego sophomore Dane Stassi has been named the Counsilman Hunsaker Men's Swimmer of the Week by CollegeSwimming.com for the NCAA Division II for the week of Jan. 21-27.
Stassi turned in a first-place performance in all four races he swam in a convincing 179-115 win for the fifth-ranked Tritons at Division I foe Cal Poly of the Pacific-12 Conference on Saturday, Jan. 26. He was fastest in two individual events, sweeping his specialty butterfly races for a second straight Saturday, while also swimming on both triumphant relays to open and close the meet.
The Irvine native first swam the butterfly leg (22.46 split) of the top 200 medley relay (1:33.22). Stassi, already an automatic NCAA qualifier who broke school records in both butterfly distances at November's Arena Invitational (48.13, 1:45.65) and holds Division II's best mark this season in the 200, raced 1:50.97 (1:51.60 a week ago) to touch first in the 200 by over a second and a half, and then 50.79 (51.33 a week ago) later in the 100.
To round out the day, Stassi sprinted 21.55 to lead off the first-place 200 free relay (1:24.74). His split was a time that would have been good enough to win the 50 free earlier (by .02 seconds).
UCSD improved it's record to 8-2, concluding the dual season with seven straight wins as the Triton men now await the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference (PCSC) Championships in La Mirada, Feb. 13-16.
Stassi is UCSD's second national Swimmer of the Week honoree this season. Senior co-captain Beth Dong earned the distinction for Division II women back on Jan. 8. Dong and her teammates still do face one last dual date, this Saturday, Feb. 2, against crosstown rival University of San Diego. The action at the Canyonview Aquatic Center is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
