IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 17 UC San Diego women's water polo team dropped a pair of non-conference games at the UC Irvine Invitational Saturday, opening play with a 12-8 loss to No. 3 UCLA followed by a 13-12 sudden death decision in favor of No. 14 UC Davis.

The Tritons fell to 4-6 overall on the season.

UCSD was led by freshman Alexis Wieseler, who scored five goals on the day. Classmate Julia Kirkland turned in a four-goal performance for the Tritons.

UC San Diego will take on Pacific Sunday at 11:45 a.m. and will wrap up tourney play against No. 15 Cal State Northridge at 4 p.m.

Game 1
UCLA struck first in the opening quarter. Kirkland answered right back with a lob shot to tie it up. However, UCLA netted three unanswered goals and eventually took a 5-3 lead into the second quarter.

Both teams played tight defense through the second period as each managed just a single goal through the full eight minutes.

The Bruins made a small run in the third quarter, posting a 3-1 advantage to take a 9-5 lead into the final stanza.

The two squads matched each other with three goals apiece in the final quarter.

Wieseler led the Tritons offensively with three goals while Kirkland finished with two.

Sarah Lizotte and Jolene Guiliana each dished out two assists and scored one goal.

UCLA's freshman class was solid as five different individuals posted at least one goal. Alexa Tielmann led with three goals.

Courtney Miller made one save for UCSD, while Sammi Hill had six for UCLA.
