SAN DIEGO - UC San Diego swimmer Dane Stassi was named last week as a San Diego Hall of Champions Breitbard Star of the Month for March.
Stassi swam to his first national title in the 200-yard butterfly at the 2013 NCAA Division II Championships in Birmingham, Ala., on Mar. 8. Trailing at the halfway mark, Stassi exploded over the final 100 yards and won going away by over two full seconds, breaking his own school record in 1:45.12. The Irvine native also placed seventh in the 100 fly and swam the fly leg of the 200 and 400 medley relays, both of which finished eighth. He was a four-time All-American for the four-day meet, and is now a five-time All-American for his career. The Tritons were seventh as a team.
Junior co-captain Anji Shakya, UCSD’s only other national champion at this year’s NCAA Championships, was already recognized as a Star of the Month for February following her stellar performance as the women’s swimmer of the meet at the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference (PCSC) Championships.
Shakya, Stassi and baseball pitcher Ryan Goodbrand now make three San Diego Hall of Champions honorees for UCSD through the first three months of 2013.
Stassi was among seven recipients for March at the amateur level. A total of 16 professional, amateur and high school athletes were chosen.
