OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - Three UC San Diego men’s crews took part in a total of eight races at the 2013 Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championship Regatta Saturday and Sunday on Melton Hill Lake.
The Varsity 8 crossed the finish line third among six in Sunday’s B Final, timing 6:04.50 behind first-place Notre Dame (6:00.10). That boat began the competition with a second-place effort (6:20.08) in its first race on Saturday morning. Florida Tech, the eventual A Final champion to cap the regatta, went 6:15.00 to win that first of five initial heats. In the C Semifinal later that afternoon, the Varsity 8 produced a 6:07.00 mark for third, within three seconds of second-place Temple (6:04.60).
The Junior Varsity 8 was fifth out of six crews in Sunday’s A Final. Virginia won in 6:02.20 ahead of UCSD’s time of 6:16.30. The JV8 had narrowly qualified for the A Final by edging out Purdue (6:18.08) for second in its only other race on Saturday morning, going 6:17.24. Temple took that opening heat of three in 6:16.00.
Rounding out UCSD’s SIRA participation was the Novice 8 boat, which, like the Varsity 8, contested the B Final on Sunday. The Tritons were fourth out of six in 6:36.40. Colorado won it in 6:29.90. The Novice 8 kicked off the regatta for UCSD Saturday morning with a second-place finish (6:25.29) behind Purdue (6:20.70) in the third of four heats. Six hours later, the Tritons returned to the water for the B Semifinal, crossing fifth in 6:20.90. They fell short of the A Final, as Jacksonville took third in 6:16.10.
The UCSD men’s and women’s rowing squads will both be in action next at the 2013 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship Regatta on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 27-28.
