ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The UC San Diego men’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a poor shooting night against Sonoma State on Friday night, falling on the road 79-54 at the Wolves’ Den. James McCann (Carlsbad/La Costa Canyon HS) finished with a game-high 17 points for UCSD in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup.

The loss drops the Tritons to 7-6 overall and 3-6 in league play, while Sonoma State improves to 2-11 overall and 1-8 in the CCAA with the win.

McCann finished the night seven-of-15 from the floor and also contributed six rebounds and two assists as a bright spot for the Tritons. Adam Klie also shot well from the floor and finished four-of-five for eight points as the second-leading scorer for UCSD.

As a team, the Tritons were held to 17-of-50 from the field for a mark of 34.0%. The difference in the game proved to be the three-point shooting, as the Tritons finished three-of-24 from deep (12.5%). Sonoma State, meanwhile, drained 10-of-16 shots from beyond the arc (62.5%) and concluded the night 28-of-52 from the floor (53.8%).

Sonoma State was able to out-rebound the Tritons, the top-ranked team in the conference in rebounding, 31-18 on the night. The difference in rebounding led to 17 second-chance points and 34 points in the paint for the Seawolves, compared to UCSD’s four second-chance points and 24 points in the paint.

The Tritons scored the first points of the game, but it proved to be their only lead of the night as Sonoma State responded with nine straight points to grab the lead for good. SSU made five three’s in the first half and led 42-20 at the intermission.

Sonoma State continued the hot shooting into the second half and eventually grabbed its largest of the night of 27 points with 5:03 remaining in the game before closing out the win, 79-54.

“We obviously didn’t play our best basketball tonight,” said head coach Eric Olen. “Sonoma State deserves a lot of credit for the way they played tonight, but we didn’t do the little things in order to be successful tonight. We have a quick turnaround so we have to bounce back and play better tomorrow.”

The Seawolves were led by 15 points from Mike Harris. Justin Herold (13) and James Davis (12) also finished in double-digits for Sonoma State.

Kevin Harris finished with seven points, while Treavon Francis amassed five points and four rebounds in the loss for UCSD.

The Tritons will look to get back on track tomorrow night as they take on San Francisco State at The Swamp. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
