by UCSD

HONOLULU - UC San Diego went down to No. 10 Hawai’i, 3-0, in the first of a two-match Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) men’s volleyball series Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Scores were 25-15, 25-13, 25-21.

With the result, UCSD falls to 0-6 overall and 0-5 in the MPSF. Hawai’i improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in league play with a second straight home win.

The Rainbow Warriors were up by just two at 14-12 past the midway point of the first set, before pulling away and tallying 11 of the next 14. UH then got out to 3-0, 10-4 and 15-7 advantages in the second set and never looked back.

UCSD held its first and only lead of the night at 3-2 early in the third stanza on back-to-back kills by outside hitters Eric Barber and Ian Colbert, but Hawai’i eventually broke a sixth and final deadlock in the set of 7-7 and regained a 10-7 cushion. UH later used a four-point run for a 15-10 bulge to wrestle firm control.

Hawai’i had the upper hand at the net throughout the match, finishing with 10.0 team blocks to just 2.5 for UCSD. The Rainbow Warriors produced a pair of triple blocks in the first game, and scored the first three points in the second all via blocks, with a combination effort by Taylor Averill and Brook Sedore followed by a solo stuff from each of those teammates. UH hit .353, with the Tritons at .067.

Senior outside hitter Nick Iorfino led UCSD offensively with eight kills. Libero Elliot Shaw collected a team- and career-high six digs. Fellow sophomore Kirill Rudenko drew his first college start and put together the first four kills, service ace and two digs of his Triton career.

Barber added a career-high three kills off the bench while Colbert matched his best with five kills. Freshman middle blocker Jackson Wopat posted his first two collegiate kills late in the third.

Sinisa Zarkovic produced match highs of nine kills and three aces to pace UH. Averill and Sedore managed eight kills apiece. Averill hit .636 (8-1-11) and also got his hands to seven total blocks. Setter Joby Ramos had 28 assists, two kills on two attacks, four digs and four block assists. Libero Kolby Kanetake reached seven digs.

The Tritons remain in Honolulu to take on the Rainbow Warriors again this Sunday, Jan. 26. First serve inside the Stan Sheriff Center is set for 7 p.m. PT (5 p.m. local).
