Rosser, Levy Named Academic All-Americans

by UCSD

TOWSON, Md. - UC San Diego student-athletes Clint Rosser and Kellen Levy were both named Wednesday to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Men’s Track/Cross Country Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Rosser, a pole vaulter, is on the 16-member first team, while Levy, a distance runner for the Triton cross country and track squads, made the 16-person third team.

The awards recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The two Triton standouts had advanced to the Capital One Academic All-America® ballot on the basis of being chosen as first-team Academic All-District® honorees last month for District 8.

The distinction is a first for both Rosser and Levy, who each completed their junior years at UCSD earlier this month. Student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be an important contributor athletically to be eligible for consideration as Capital One Academic All-America®.

Rosser, out of Westchester and Loyola High School of Los Angeles, maintains a 3.97 grade-point average in environmental engineering. He earned the Elite 89 award for Division II outdoor men’s track and field, given on May 22 by the NCAA for having the highest grade-point average among the male student-athletes that qualified for the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo. Three days later on May 25, Rosser improved 10 spots from his No. 19 seeding and finished in a tie for ninth nationally in the pole vault, achieving a height of 16’2.75” and narrowly missing out on a top-eight All-America position.

Rosser had qualified for the NCAA Championships by clearing a personal-best 16’3.5” in winning at the Azusa Pacific Last Chance Qualifier on May 11. That mark is third-best in program history. He was third (16’2.5”) at the 2013 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships in Turlock on May 4.

Rosser garnered CCAA All-Academic recognition in 2011 and is a two-time UCSD All-Academic Team honoree with the top GPA in the men’s track program.

Levy, a Fresno native and graduate of Clovis West High School, is a literature/writing major with a 3.72 GPA. He turned in the top times for the Tritons during the past track season in the 800 meters (1:55.59), 1500 (3:55.89), 3000 (8:35.00) and 10000 (30:58.93). That latter mark in the 10000 earned him his first conference title in Turlock on May 3 and is the fourth-fastest in UCSD history.

Levy was also the Tritons’ top finisher three times during the 2012 cross country campaign. He is a three-time U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II All-Academic Team selection and two-time CCAA All-Academic honoree.

Brent Vogel, a senior at the University of Central Missouri with a 3.74 GPA in biology, was named as the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year for the Division II Men’s Track/Cross Country program. Fellow national champion Kristen Hixson of Grand Valley State University, a junior finance major with a 3.96 GPA, earned the women’s award.

The only other CCAA representative, among 46 men recognized, was Cal State Stanislaus graduate student Dawson Vorderbruegge (4.00, English) on the first team. The 16 members of that team, including Rosser, have an average GPA of 3.83.

UCSD completed the 2012-13 academic year with an all-time program-best total of eight Academic All-Americans, doubling its haul of four from 2011-12. Alongside Rosser and Levy, the group consisted of Cassie Callahan, Hayley Johnson and Ellen Wilson, all third-team women’s soccer honorees, as well as Luke Calkins (first team, men’s diving), Brian Donohoe (first, men’s water polo) and Alyssa Dixon-Word (third, women’s crew), all selections in the at-large category.
