WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UC San Diego's Jesse Morrill was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Male Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week ending September 5, it was announced Monday.
Morrill, who redshirted the 2009 season, returned to competition with a bang on Friday, leading the Tritons to a dominant season-opening victory over Cerritos College and Point Loma Nazarene. The Newport Beach, Calif. native was the top individual finisher in the men's four-mile run, clocking in at 22:15.3 in his first competition since November 2008.
The senior set the tone for the Tritons, as head coach Nate Garcia's squad had the top four finishers in the race and claimed six of the top seven spots overall to easily outdistance competitors from Cerritos and PLNU.
Morrill and the Tritons are back in action this Saturday when they will take part in the Asics/UC Irvine Invitational.
