What's On Tap
After capturing a pair of top-four finishes at the CCAA Championships in Santa Rosa two weeks ago, the UC San Diego cross country teams will head to Spokane, Wash. for the 2011 NCAA Division II West Regional Championships on Saturday. Hosted by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) and the Spokane Regional Sports Commission, the meet will be held at Plantes Ferry Regional Park and feature a women's 6k race beginning at 10:30 a.m. and a men's 10k at 11:30.

Up For Grabs
A spot in the 2011 NCAA National Championships will be on the line this weekend as the top four teams in both the men's and women's races will earn the right to return to Spokane to compete in the national meet on November 19. Additionally, the top two individuals in each race not on one of the qualifying teams will also advance to compete for a national title. The Tritons will be looking to return to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2007 on both sides when the gun goes off on Saturday.

Rank and File
UCSD's men head to Washington ranked sixth in the latest USTFCCCA West Regional poll, while the women currently rank seventh. The Tritons stayed put at No. 6 in the latest men's poll after finishing behind Chico State (currently ranked first in the West) and San Francisco State (fifth) at the CCAA Championships, while the women slipped three spots after coming in behind Chico State (first), Cal Poly Pomona (fourth) and Cal State L.A. (sixth).

Wild, Wild West
The Tritons will be competing against some of the top programs in the country on Saturday as several teams from the West region are currently ranked in the USTFCCCA national polls. The men's race will feature four nationally ranked teams, including No. 5 Chico State, No. 11 Alaska Anchorage, No. 20 Western Washington and No. 23 Western Oregon. Chico State, Alaska Anchorage and Western Washington will be among the favorites in the women's competition as well, as those programs come in ranked fifth, seventh and 16th, in the women's national poll, respectively.

Head coach Nate Garcia will take seven men and seven women to Spokane to compete in the NCAA West Regional Championships on Saturday. Representing the Tritons on the men's side will be seniors Alex Corliss, Jeremy Riley and John Svet, junior Matt Lenehan and the sophomore triumvirate of Mario Flores, Kellen Levy and Ben Rich. Senior Aaryn Kobayashi, sophomores Chia Chang and Ximena Cruz and freshmen Alia Bales, Dani Brabender, Michelle Le Roux and Madison Tanner will get the call for the women.

Last Time Out
UCSD turned in a pair of strong performances at the CCAA Championships on October 22, but both squads fell short of their goals in the eyes of the Triton coaches. UCSD finished third out of eight teams in the men's 8k, while the Triton women took fourth place in 12-team 6k field. The performance marked UCSD's second consecutive third place showing on the men's side, while the women moved up one spot after finishing fifth in 2010. Junior Matt Lenehan was the Tritons' top individual finisher in the men's race with a 13th place time of 26:32.9, while sophomore Chia Chang finished seventh overall at 21:34.8 to pace the women. Lenehan and Chang earned spots on the All-CCAA Team by virtue of their top-15 finish, as did teammate Michelle Le Roux, who finished 13th at 21:34.8. We've Been Here Before
The Tritons will be competing in Spokane for the second time this season on Saturday, having already achieved impressive results on the Plantes Ferry Regional Park course. Both squads fared well at the Runners Soul Erik Anderson Invitational there in late September, as the Triton women finished fifth out of 26 teams competing in the 6k and the men placed seventh in a 25-team 8k competition. UCSD was the second-highest finishing Division II squad in the women's race, coming in behind only Western Washington, which placed third. Click here for more on the Erik Anderson Invitational.

NCAA West Regional, 2010 Style
UCSD will be looking for a much better showing at the NCAA West Regional this season after finishing eighth and 14th in the men's and women's competitions at Lake Padden Park in Bellingham, Wash. in 2010. Senior Jesse Morrill was UCSD's top finisher on the men's side, coming in 26th overall with a 10k time of 33:10.7, while sophomore Catherine Crisp put together one of her best performances of the season to lead the Triton women, finishing 52nd overall with an 8k time of 24:41.7.
