Release: Thursday 09/20/2012
The Schedule
Meet No. 3
2012 Lancer Invitational
Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 • 8:30 a.m.
Rancho Jurupa Regional Park • Riverside, Calif.

The Third Course of Action
The UC San Diego cross country teams on Saturday will travel to the Cal Baptist-hosted Lancer Invitational in Riverside. This race comes two weeks after the men finished second overall while the women placed ninth at the adidas/UC Irvine Invitational on Sept. 8. The starting guns for the women's 5,000-meter race and the men's 8m race will be fired at 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., respectively.

The Starting Line-Up
While this is the first-ever running of the Lancer Invitational, the Tritons are quite familiar with most of the competition they will be facing in Saturday's inaugural meet. The women will compete against CBU, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino and Providence Christian. Joining the UCSD men at the starting line will be CBU and Providence Christian.

At This Point Last Year ...
During the 2011 season, UCSD participated in the 67th Annual San Diego State Aztec Invitational in San Diego's Balboa Park. In that meet, the men placed fourth out of five teams in their 8k race and the women finished seventh of eight in their 5k event. Then-freshman Tanner Collins led the men with his 13th-place finishing time of 26:51.8. The women were led by senior Kathryn Turner (19:47.9, 27th), and junior Elena Inouye (19:57.7, 33rd) had the best finish among active Tritons.

Levy-ing the Scene
Junior Kellen Levy has been UCSD's top runner on the men's side in both races this season. Levy finished ninth overall, crossing the finish line of the 8k race in 25:46.9. The Fresno native was the California Collegiate Athletic Association's (CCAA) Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week of Aug. 27 - Sept. 2 upon winning the UC San Diego Opener with a time of 21:39.2 in the four-mile race on Aug. 31.

Chang's Chain
Junior Chia Chang extended her streak of being UCSD's top runner with her 28th-place showing at the Sept. 8 adidas/UC Irvine Invitational (18:38.5). With the feat, Chang lengthened her string of meets in which she has competed and finished as the Tritons' No. 1 runner to eight. The last time Chang competed for the Tritons and was not their top runner was Nov. 20, 2010 in the NCAA Division II West Regional Championships in Bellingham, Wash. Chang placed 107th overall (25:49.0) and was seventh among the Tritons, who finished eighth as a team.

The Future Looks Bright
Looking at the men's and women's top five finishers from the adidas/UC Irvine Invitational, both teams have three underclassmen among their top five. Freshman Tareq Alwafai (25:57.6, 16th), sophomore Tanner Collins (26:06.2, 25th) and freshman Scott Acton (26:18.9, 30th) were the Tritons' second, fourth and fifth finishers for the men. On the women's side, freshman Carolina Guzman (19:05.8, 45th), sophomore Dani Brabender (19:30.4, 71st) and sophomore Michelle Le Roux (19:34.8, 75th) were also situated in those three slots for UCSD.

At the No. 3 slot for both teams, the men and women have experience. The men have junior Mario Flores, who finished 16th with a time of 25:59.0. For the women, Inouye not only has experience but she is also having a remarkable comeback year. Inouye, who finished 56th with a time of 19:15.6 in her race, improved her 2011 time by nearly 35 seconds and her finishing place by 50 slots.
