UC San Diego's Tanner Collins
has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week. The announcement was made Monday by the league.
Collins finished first in the men's 8k race at the 20th Annual Triton Classic on Saturday, leading UCSD to a first-place team finish. The sophomore crossed the line in 26:15.0 and never trailed at any mile marker during the race, which featured a field of 158 competitors.
UCSD turned in a team score of 25 points (1-4-5-6-9), easily besting Division-I Loyola Marymount (85) in second and Orange Coast College (92) in third.
Senior Lisa Ohberg of Cal State L.A., who placed second with a time of 22:14.6 in the women's 6k race at the Triton Classic, earned the weekly honor for the women.
Collins, a sophomore, is the second Triton bestowed with the accolade this season. Junior Kellen Levy earned the award for his first-place showing at the UC San Diego Opener on Aug. 31.
The Tritons will next take to the starting line when they host the 2012 CCAA Championships on Saturday, Oct. 20. The men's 8k race commences at 9 a.m. with the women's 6k race at 10 a.m.
