UCSD Fourth, Simon Ties For 15th at Cougar Invitational

VISTA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team wrapped up play at its first tournament of the spring season Tuesday, placing fourth out of 16 squads at the Cougar Invitational, hosted by Cal State San Marcos at Shadowridge Country Club.

UCSD shot a 15-over par 303 in Tuesday's third and final round to finish at 908 (310-295-303--908), 44-over par, for the tourney. The Tritons were tied for third after Monday's first and second rounds.

Junior Lewis Simon was UCSD's top individual finisher, placing in a tie for 15th with a 9-over 225 (77-73-75--225).

Oklahoma City held onto its lead after day one to win the team championship. The Stars ended with a 21-over 885 (298-292-295--885) to top the field. Cal State San Marcos totaled a 27-over 891 (294-298-299--891) to place second while The Master's College took third with a 36-over 900 (302-303-295--900).

UCLA's Jake Knapp won the individual title, shooting an 8-under 208 (70-65-73--208). Matt Pinizzotto, also out of UCLA, posted a 1-under 215 (76-70-69--215) for a second place finish and Kale Davidson of Embry-Riddle was third with a 2-over 218 (74-75-69--218).

Also competing for UCSD was junior Jacob Williams (T-23rd, 77-76-74--227), freshman Daniel Yang (T-23rd, 77-73-77--227), sophomore Jay Lim (T-39th, 84-73-77--234) and freshman Clayton Yamaguchi (T-60th, 79-85-79--243).

Williams' Tuesday score of 2-over 74 was the lowest for the Tritons in the final round. Lim, Simon and Yang all carded a 73 in Monday's second round, the lowest single-round total for UCSD at Shadowridge.

Simon recorded 40 pars over his three rounds, tied with one other player for the most during the tourney. Williams was the lone player in the field to eagle two holes.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, the only other California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) team in attendance, finished 13th with a plus-100 964 (326-321-317--964).

The Tritons also placed fourth at last season's Cougar Invitational at Shadowridge.

UCSD is off until competing at the Coyote Classic, hosted by Cal State San Bernardino, on Feb. 25 and Feb. 26.
