TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 2 UC San Diego softball team earned a 2-1 victory over sixth-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato Saturday afternoon after dropping an 8-0 decision to No. 16 Central Oklahoma on the second day of action at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Arizona.
The Tritons now hold a 7-5 overall record on the season.
UCSD lost, 8-0, to Central Oklahoma in the first game of the day.
Monique Portugal had two hits for UCSD, which totaled eight singles in the game.
UCO had four players combine for nine hits and eight RBIs over the run rule-shortened five inning affair.
The Bronchos scored three runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Nicole Workman and an RBI single by Sam Cool. Three runs in the bottom of the fourth put Central Oklahoma up 6-0 and another pair in the fifth ended the game.
Kayla Hensel pitched seven strong innings to carry UCSD to a 2-1 win over Minnesota State-Mankato in the nightcap.
Katie Saunders launched her first home run of the season in the fourth inning to put the Tritons on the board first.
MSUM scored its lone run in the sixth on an RBI double by Abby Sonner.
Hensel scattered three hits, struck out two and walked none in the complete game effort to up her season mark to 6-1.
UC San Diego continues tournament play with a copper bracket semifinal against Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday at 9 a.m. (PT). The other semifinal features 23rd-ranked Molloy against Regis. The bracket championship and consolation games will take place at 11 a.m. (PT).
