by UCSD

ARCATA, Calif. - The UC San Diego softball team dropped a pair of tough decisions to No. 6 Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play Friday afternoon.

UCSD's six-game win streak came to an end with a 11-3 decision in favor of HSU in six innings of play in the series opener. The Lumberjacks swept the doubleheader with an 8-5 win in game two.

The Tritons now hold a 28-18 overall record and sit at 21-9 in CCAA play, while HSU is 38-12 and 25-5 in league.

Kirsten Willmon, Caitlin Brown, Nicole Spangler and Mya Romero each recorded hits in both ends of the doubleheader. Willmon led going 3-for-3 in game one and finishing 5-for-7 with one run and two RBI.

Humboldt State scored the first run in the opening frame on an RBI double by Courtney Hiatt. The Lumberjacks built their lead to 6-0 in the second through home runs by Chrissy Stalf and Dani Randall.

After coming in to close the second inning without further damage by earning the final out, Kayla Hensel made an immediate impact in her relief effort, retiring the side in both the third and fourth innings.

Willmon and Brown singled before Spangler connected on an RBI double to bring in the Tritons' first run in the fourth.

Romero’s double and Willmon’s single to right field highlighted the Tritons' two-run surge in the top of the fifth to bring UCSD within three. Randall answered right back, opening HSU’s half with a home run to right center to regain some separation.

Humboldt State added four runs in the sixth inning to earn the 11-3 victory by run rule. Randall gathered her third home run of the game to account for three runs, while Tonya Walker, Hiatt, Hannah Williams and Julie Pena all recorded singles.

Michelle Escamilla (3-9) tossed the opening inning and went seven batters through the second to give up six runs off four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Hensel took over from there, giving up the remaining five runs off eight hits, with two strikeouts of her own and two walks.

Early success with singles by Taylor Sepulveda, Emily McQuaid and Willmon loaded the bases early in game two. The Tritons scored on a single through the left side by Spangler to hold a 1-0 lead in the opening frame.

After walks to Stalf and Randall, Williams put HSU on top with a two-out, three-run home run to center field. The Tritons' field play put an end to the first inning without any further damage, keeping it 3-1.

UCSD and HSU exchanged single runs through the next two innings. The Triton tally came in the second with singles by Mckenna Clewett, McQuaid and Willmon. Clewett scored the run off Willmon’s single to center field.

After scoring one in the third, the Lumberjacks recorded their third inning of the afternoon in which they posted four or more runs, in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Williams homered down the left field line to quickly take control at 8-2.

The Tritons' single run in the fifth and two in the sixth were not enough to make up the difference as HSU took game two, 8-5.

Jennifer Manuel (10-2) threw the complete game for UCSD, giving up 11 hits for eight runs with four walks, and one strike out.

The squads complete the series in Arcata on Saturday, Apr. 20. Doubleheader action is set to begin at 11 a.m.
