LA JOLLA, Calif. - Matt Michalko scored three times as the 11th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team opened its 2013 season with a 12-8 win over Redlands Saturday in the first game of the Triton Invitational at Canyonview Aquatic Center. In the nightcap, UCSD fell to No. 4 Cal by a score of 13-10.

Tommy Friedrich (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) led the Tritons (1-1) on the day with five goals, while Cameron Ravanbach (La Jolla/La Jolla HS) made 19 stops in net.

Game One – UCSD 12, Redlands 8

Redlands (0-2) jumped on the scoreboard first with a goal from Clint Freeman. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Tritons responded 14 seconds later with a Michalko (San Diego/The Bishop’s School) goal to even the score at 1-1.

UCSD poured in two more goals before the first quarter ended, one apiece from Jeffrey Jarvis and Friedrich, to push its lead to 3-1 heading into the second frame.

The two teams exchanged goals early in the second period before Chase Cockerill and Andy Moore found the back of the cage to make the halftime lead 6-3 in favor of UCSD.

The third period proved to be the difference in the match, with the Tritons outscoring the Bulldogs 5-1. Three straight goals to open the second half, one from Michalko and two from Luca De Vivo, pushed the UCSD lead to 9-3. Following a goal from UR's Michael Robinson, the Tritons finished the period with scores from Jarvis and Michalko to take a commanding 11-4 lead into the final quarter.

The Bulldogs made a charge late, but the deficit proved to be too large. Redlands outscored the Tritons 4-1 in the final period before UCSD escaped with a 12-8 victory.

Redlands received a hat trick from Freeman. Tyler Abbott had five saves and Christian Jamison had three for the Bulldogs.

Cockerill, De Vivo and Jarvis finished with two goals apiece while Tician Toplak, Friedrich and Moore each scored a goal to go along with the hat trick from Michalko. Ravanbach totaled nine saves in the cage.

Game Two – Cal 13, UCSD 10

Friedrich tossed in four goals for UCSD, but the Tritons were not able to overcome a tough second period in a 13-10 loss against the fourth-ranked Golden Bears.

Cal jumped on the scoreboard first with a goal from Hunter Gettelfinger before UCSD answered with two goals from Freidrich to put UCSD up 2-1 after one period of play.

UCSD allowed two early goals in the second period to fall behind 3-2. Toplak responded to tie the match at 3-3, but the Bears closed out the period on a three-goal run to head into halftime up 6-3. The Tritons were outscored 5-1 in the quarter.

Coming out of halftime, the Tritons looked sharp, gathering a quick goal from Friedrich to pull within two at 6-4. UCSD closed out the period on a three-goal run by De Vivo, Toplak and Friedrich to pull within two at 9-7.

Entering the final period within striking distance, Cal continued to answer any Triton comeback effort. Down 10-7 and following a great save from Ravanbach, UCSD called a timeout to set up an offensive set. Coming out on the attack, Cal responded with a solid defensive stop and followed with a goal from Gettelfinger, his fourth of the night, to put the Bears up 11-7.

Joe Dietrich pulled the Tritons within two at 12-10 with 1:26 remaining, but Cal once again responded with an impressive goal from Farrel South. After a scramble for a loose ball, South spun and fired a shot into the cage to account for the final 13-10 score.

Collin Smith, Thomas Agramonte and Mitchell Hamilton all totaled two goals for the Bears while Jon Sibley stopped 14 shots in the cage.

Ravanbach amassed 10 saves for UCSD.

The Tritons wrap up tourney play Sunday, taking on Cal Lutheran at 8:30 a.m and No. 2 UCLA at 4:30 p.m.
