MONTEREY PARK, Calif. - The UC San Diego men’s swim team placed second at the conclusion of the 2013 Arena Invitational on Saturday. UCSD was again the host of the annual three-day meet, held this year at East Los Angeles College Swim Stadium.
The Triton men finished with 1261 points, behind Hawai’i at 1649 and 106 ahead of Pacific (1155). The UCSD women were 10th out of 11 squads with 508.5 points. City rival San Diego State (1196.5) held off San Jose State (1094) for first.
Nicholas Korth put the final touches on his Arena Invite swan song with an incredible swim in the 200 breaststroke. Though defeated by Sean Mahoney (1:54.85), he joined his unattached opponent in both getting under the longstanding previous meet record in the event, speeding 1:56.26 to also eclipse former Stanford standout Kurt Grote’s 1:56.51 from 20 years ago. Korth, the 2011 NCAA Division II champion in the 200, holds the school standard in the event of 1:54.61 from the 2013 NCAA Championships.
Speaking of NCAA Championships, Korth thus became the fourth Triton to book his place in the 2014 meet in Geneva, Ohio, joining fellow senior captain Anji Shakya and divers Luke Calkins and Garet Webster by achieving the automatic qualifier of 1:56.74.
Shakya completed her final Arena appearance with a sixth-place individual finish in the 200 back (2:02.83). She then also anchored the fifth-place 400 free relay (3:25.58) ahead of teammates Colleen Daley, Sierra Robbins and Catherine Woo.
Freshman Sasha Mitrushina was fifth for the Tritons in an impressive collegiate 1650 freestyle debut, timing 15:47.10. Senior Erika Rodman was UCSD’s top finisher in the grueling mile on the women’s side, going 17:25.29 for 14th.
Like he did in the 50 free on Thursday night, senior Reid McCallum was fastest in the consolation final of the 100 Saturday, sprinting 45.98.
Freshman Zach Yong made his second championship final in as many nights after placing seventh in the 100 breast Friday, by taking fifth in the 200 in 2:03.21. The time was almost four seconds faster than he went in morning prelims (2:07.15).
The Triton women now await Cal State East Bay for a Division II dual at Canyonview Pool on Saturday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. Both UCSD teams will be joined by their divers in a meet at San Diego State on Monday, Dec. 30, to round out the 2013 calendar year.
