LA JOLLA, Calif. - Dana Webster's layup and free throw with 14 seconds left in the game sealed a narrow 40-38 victory over league opponent Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night at RIMAC Arena.
Down by just a point, 38-37, Webster made the layup in traffic to put UCSD ahead. She was fouled in the process and drained the free throw to give the Tritons a 40-38 advantage.
Cal State Monterey Bay had two chances to stay in the game on its final possession. The Otters missed a layup and grabbed the offensive rebound, but could not get a second layup to go either.
For the second straight night, UCSD was led in scoring by Miranda Seto, who had nine points while also dishing out three assists and collecting a career-high six steals. McKennan Bertsch had a team-best eight rebounds.
The Otters had the only two players to score in double digits as Chezla Self totaled a game-high 15 and Angelique Bailey added 10. CSUMB, which out-rebounded UCSD 48-36, got 14 boards from Ashley Morgan and 12 from Holly Holcomb.
Both teams shot poorly, with UCSD finishing at 29 percent (15-51) and CSUMB hitting at a 26 percent (14-55) clip. The Otters made just three of 20 three-point attempts and seven of 13 free throws.
Cal State Monterey Bay held a sizable 48-36 advantage in rebounds, including a 15-6 edge on the offensive glass.
UC San Diego led 18-11 at the half.
UCSD improved to 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUMB dropped to 3-8 and remained winless in the league at 0-8.
