ALISO VIEJO, Calif., LA JOLLA, Calif. and WALNUT, Calif. - Highlighted by junior Keith Rose breaking his own school record in the 200 meters, the UC San Diego track and field programs completed two competitions on Friday and Saturday.
Sprinting for the 24th-ranked Triton men at the Soka Peace Invitational on the campus of Soka University in Aliso Viejo on Saturday, Rose timed 21.51 to get under his previous program standard of 21.57 from a year ago. The San Jose product also holds the UCSD record in the 100-meter dash (10.62).
Saturday’s mark in the 200 leaves Rose .06 seconds shy of an NCAA provisional qualifier.
“We had a great number of seasonal bests and lifetime PR’s today,” said UCSD men’s head coach Tony Salerno. “The conditions were perfect and we competed well. This was a great confidence builder with conference (championships) only days away.”
Friday’s best on the Tritons’ final day of involvement in the 56th Annual Mt. SAC Relays at Historic Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut was junior Carlos Bojorquez, who improved his personal-record NCAA provisional time in the 1500 meters by over a full second to 3:50.16, from 3:51.44. He placed fourth in his section and 31st overall out of 118 finishers from all different levels. The San Diego (San Diego Messa College/Kearny HS) native thus also moved up from No. 4 to No. 2 all-time in the program record book, now just behind Jon Wong’s 3:50.03 from 2001.
Only two other current UCSD student-athletes competed Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays, with junior Tanner Collins (14:27.19) and sophomore Tareq Alwafai (14:31.88) also excelling in their own rights, both with personal records in the 5000. The Triton duo both got under the NCAA provisional standard of 14:40.00, and advanced into the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively, on the all-time Triton list.
It was a homecoming for each Triton, with Collins and Alwafai both Aliso Viejo natives out of Aliso Niguel High School.
UCSD only sent members of its distance group to the Mt. SAC Relays this year.
UCSD will welcome an elite field to Triton Track & Field Stadium in La Jolla for yet another edition of the annual Triton Invitational next Friday and Saturday, April 25-26.
