PUEBLO, Colo. - Senior A.B. Shaheen kicked off UC San Diego's slate of events at the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a 17th-place showing in the hammer throw on Thursday at CSU-Pueblo’s own Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.

Seeded 16th going into the meet, Shaheen launched the hammer a distance of 180’4” on his first attempt, which put him in fourth among 10 in his flight. However, fouls on his second and third attempts barred Shaheen from improving upon that mark. In addition, four competitors who had shorter throws than Shaheen after their first attempt, surpassed him on their second, dropping the Saddleback College alumnus to eighth in the flight.

Nine of the 10 participants in the second flight had at least one throw among their first three that outdistanced Shaheen’s first try, and thus, prevented him from advancing to attempt three more.

Shaheen had earned his No. 16 seed upon throwing a length of 191’8” to win the competition at the Soka Peace Invitational on April 19. The performance moved Shaheen from fifth to third on UCSD’s all-time top 10 list for that event.

Senior Garrett Grey of first-place Ashland won the event with a toss that traveled a length of 231’3”. Grey entered the NCAA Championships as the top seed (225’5”).

Two Triton women will compete during the second day of the NCAA Championships on Friday. Freshman Kristin Sato will take on competitors from all over the nation in the triple jump, which will get underway at 4:15 p.m. PDT. On the track, sophomore Sabrina Pimentel will take part in 800 prelims, which are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. PDT. NCAA.com provides live video coverage beginning at 4:30 p.m. PDT.

Sato comes into the meet seeded 22nd with a career-best leap of 39’6”, which she recorded in a fourth-place finish at the Cal-Nevada Championships on March 30. Pimentel ran a personal-best time of 2:10.90 to finish second at the 27th Annual Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on April 13 and earn the No. 13 seed for that competition. Sato and Pimentel rank third and second among Tritons all-time in their specialties, respectively.
