The 2012 California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships got underway with events in the heptathlon and decathlon on Thursday at Jesse Owens Track on the campus of Cal State L.A.
Senior Nick DeBeaubien was the only Triton in action on Thursday, taking part in the decathlon. The Lake Forest, Calif. native currently ranks ninth with 602 points through five events. His best finish came in the shot put as he placed first with a throw of 38'6.75".
DeBeaubien was fifth in both the long jump (20'3.5") and high jump and ninth in the 100 (12.17) and 400 (54.91).
Cal State Stanislaus' Sulayman Diomande currently leads the field with 776 points, followed by Chico State Michael Beeman in second with 769 and Cal Poly Pomona's Jesse Guthrie in third with 758. DeBeaubien trails eighth place Anthony Hall of Cal State L.A. by a mere 18 points heading into the final five events.
DeBeaubien finished sixth in the decathlon at the CCAA Championships last season, tallying 5,851 points in Turlock. He set a new personal best and finished 10th overall with 6,079 points at the prestigious California Invitational Decathlon in Azusa last month.
The decathlon will conclude on Friday with the 110-meter hurdles at 10:00 a.m., followed by the discus at 10:45 and the pole vault at 11:45. The javelin is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. and the 1500 will wrap things up at 4:15.
The rest of the CCAA Championships will also get underway on Friday, with the field events starting at 9:00 a.m. and the running events following at 2:00 p.m.
