ARCATA, Calif. - The 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's soccer team thoroughly dominated play in a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Humboldt State at College Creek Field on Sunday afternoon.

UC San Diego improves its overall record to 8-1-2 with the result, snapping a three-match winless streak after a perfect 7-0 start to the campaign. Humboldt State falls to 1-7 with the loss in its home finale on Senior Day.

"After Friday night, we didn't really know what to expect," remarked Triton head coach Brian McManus. "Humboldt State had played Cal State San Bernardino very tough and we were worried about what our work rate and energy would be like today, but it was tremendous."

The first half saw UCSD pepper the Lumberjack goal to the tune of 12 shots, without allowing a single scoring attempt to the hosts. Of the 12 shots, four were on target, with three coming from leading scorer Cassie Callahan, including a header saved by Jacks goalkeeper Kelly Lukas in the 13th minute. The Tritons also earned six corner kicks before the break, with five in a four-minute span early on.

UCSD finally got its just reward in the form of a Hayley Johnson free-kick goal in the 38th minute. After the match official awarded a direct free kick at the very tip of the 18-yard penalty box, facing the Humboldt State goal head-on, Johnson stepped up to the ball. The senior defender neatly curled her right-footed shot just inside the right post and into the back of the net for her third goal of the season and the 1-0 edge.

"In the first half, we completely played them off the park and kept hold of the ball for the most part," added McManus. "We had one goal, but could have had three or four."

With its first credited shot of the afternoon, Humboldt State equalized at the 50:10 mark, as Maddi Null headed a Lizzie Mitchell cross into the corner of the goal for 1-1.

The jubilation did not last long for the home side, however, as UCSD was back on top just over six minutes later at 56:28. It was Johnson again, from a free kick, again, this time from about 20 yards away and into the right side once more.

The Tritons got an insurance tally in the 68th minute with a little help from their opponents, as a UCSD corner kick wound up going for an own goal.

Izzy Pozurama rounded out the scoring on the day with her first of 2012 at 76:22. Melisa Tallis crossed to Callahan, whose headed pass was put home by the sophomore. The assists marked Callahan's third this year and Tallis' first college point.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky was not called upon to make a single save over the first 79:30 for the Tritons, with Itzel Gonzalez stopping one shot while completing the match. Lukas had six saves for the Jacks.

The final shots total was a commanding 25-5 in favor of UCSD, with the Tritons taking 13 corner kicks to just one by Humboldt State.

Callahan, Pozurama and junior forward Casey Parisi shared the game high with four shots apiece, with three of Pozurama's efforts on target.

The Tritons, still in first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division, return home to take on Cal State L.A. on Friday, Oct. 12. Kick-off at Triton Soccer Field is slated for 7 p.m., after the UCSD men meet the Golden Eagles at 4:30 p.m.
