LA JOLLA, Calif. - A potent .366 attack led the 24th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team to its fifth straight win, a 3-0 sweep of league opponent Humboldt State Friday night at RIMAC Arena. Scores were 25-14, 25-19 and 25-20.
UCSD totaled 48 kills and just 11 errors in 101 attacks to come away with its second-highest hitting percentage of the season - its best since swinging at .395 on Sept. 22 at Humboldt State. The Lumberjacks had 14 fewer kills and made 19 errors in 98 attempts for a .153 attack.
Outside hitter Danielle Dahle led UCSD with 14 kills while hitting .355 (14-3-31). She also added seven digs and two blocks. Middle blocker Sara McCutchan was nearly perfect on attack, swinging at .889 with eight kills and no errors in nine attempts. She led all players with five blocks.
Amber Hawthorne and Heidi Sierks split the setting duties to pace the Triton offense, recording 24 and 19 assists, respectively.
Defensively, nine Tritons had multiple digs, led by Dahle's seven.
For HSU, Alexa Rosendale tallied a match-high 16 kills. She and Tiffany McCray each had a match-best nine digs. Channel Washington had five kills and made no errors in 10 attacks.
Kills by Sheridan Taylor and Dahle and an attack error by HSU allowed UCSD to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set and the Jacks would not get any closer than two points the rest of the way. The Tritons had a pair of five-point runs as well as a four-point run in the set.
Down 3-2 early in set number two, UC San Diego reeled off five consecutive points to take a 7-3 advantage. The Tritons pushed their lead to eight when yet another five-point spree led to a 14-6 score. At 21-12, Humboldt broke through with a run of its own, scoring seven straight times to get within two points at 21-19. However, a service error started a four-point campaign for UCSD to close out the set.
A Washington kill gave HSU a 6-5 lead in the third frame, but UCSD scored six of the next eight points to go up for good. A later five-point run saw the lead grow to 19-11, but Humboldt made it interesting. Down 20-13, the Jacks tallied five points in a row to get within two at 20-18. Following a timeout, the Tritons came back to the floor to gain the next two points on a Lizzy Andrews kill and an attack error by HSU. At 24-20, McCutchan ended it with her eighth kill of the night.
The Tritons improved to 16-6 overall and 11-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the Jacks dropped to 2-19 and stayed winless in league play at 0-14. UCSD is 6-1 at RIMAC Arena this season.
